Ukraine’s gold reserves are estimated at more than 36.1 tonnes, according to the national bank, and is ranked 47 in world standings.

In March Ukraine was 51 according to the World Gold Council.

For the second consecutive year Ukraine is trying to diversify  its international reserves and is actively buying gold on both  foreign and domestic markets. However the price is turbulent and  experts argue, whether the Central Bank should join in the rush  or wait until the price settles.

There have been reports Ukraine is going to start gold mining.  Experts estimate Ukraine’s gold resources at 400 tons in the  Carpathian Mountains and 500 tons in the Donbass region. Some  gold is also believed to be in the Crimea and Dnepropetrovsk  regions.

Right now Ukraine has no gold production of its own and buys  around 5 tonnes of gold a year. Domestic production of gold could  start this year, the deputy head of National Bank, Vera Rychakovskya said. In three to five years Ukraine is expected to  produce at least one ton of gold domestically and gradually  increase capacity which will allow to cut imports by a third.

“The Ukrainian State Geology Committee estimated that Ukraine has reserves of 3 200 t of gold which have been identified in over 200 locations, of which several have reserves of over 100t of gold.

Currently the only commercial gold mining ventures are located at the Muzhiyev and Saulyak deposits, situated in the Trans-Carpathian region. Local company Ukraisnkiye polimetaly has a licence to mine the Muzhiyev deposit and intends producing 1 t of gold per year. It also has licenses to develop several other highly prospective deposits in the region.”

Viktor Yanukovych is currently being accused of mass murder and many sources claim he stole the gold reserve, especially (Globalists – Soros – Pinchuk’ boy – Arseniy Yatsenyuk – the new interim banker PM). The  accusations against Yanukovych may be true but one has to wonder when one thinks of Milosovec, Murbarak, Ghadafi et al…not saying they were great leaders, far from it, but….

Serbia – Milosovec was accused of mass murder and gold theft. The real reason for the “war” was to steal Kosovo and the Trepca mines from the Serbs.

Pinchuk: Trade Dispute Centers on Ukrainian Executive With Ties to Clintons

Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton have built a sprawling network of powerful friends around the globe, one that could aid Mrs. Clinton’s chances were she to seek the presidency. But those relationships often come with intersecting interests and political complications; few people illustrate that more vividly than the Ukrainian oligarch Victor Pinchuk.

A steel magnate and major contributor to the former president’s foundation, Mr. Pinchuk was in frequent contact with Mrs. Clinton’s State Department, at meetings arranged by a Clinton political operative turned lobbyist, Douglas E. Schoen.

And now Mr. Pinchuk is at the center of a trade dispute that places him at odds with steelworkers in Pennsylvania and Ohio, precisely the kind of union workers Mrs. Clinton would need to appeal to in a presidential campaign.

Mr. Pinchuk’s relationship to the Clintons became the subject of scrutiny last summer when American steel makers filed a case alleging that Ukraine — and by extension Mr. Pinchuk’s company, Interpipe Ltd. — and eight other countries had illegally dumped a type of steel tube used in natural gas extraction, an industry whose growth has provided one of the few bright spots in the United States manufacturing sector.

The Commerce Department is expected to issue a preliminary ruling in the case as early as Thursday. If it decides that dumping occurred, it could impose duties on Interpipe’s steel imports, which, analysts say, would push the indebted company deeper into financial distress.

The situation has taken on new urgency for Interpipe, given the political crisis in Ukraine, which has led to a virtual block on imports of its steel products to Russia. Interpipe had hoped to make up for lost revenue with increased sales in the United States.

Spokesmen for the Clintons declined to comment on the relationship. Nick Merrill, a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton, said that from Jan. 21, 2009, to Feb. 1, 2013, her entire tenure as secretary of state, Mr. Pinchuk was never on her schedule.

Mr. Pinchuk, 53, is one of Ukraine’s only oligarchs to have deep ties to Washington. Many of the country’s richest businessmen are suspected of having links to organized crime and do not have visas to the United States, much less a relationship with a former and potentially future American president.

Still, Mr. Pinchuk’s image is not without blemish: His father-in-law is Leonid Kuchma, who was president of Ukraine from 1994 to 2005 and led a government criticized for corruption, nepotism and the murder of dissident journalists. As president, Mr. Kuchma privatized a huge state steel factory and sold it to Mr. Pinchuk’s consortium for about $800 million, which competitors said was a laughably low price.

Since 2006, Mr. Pinchuk has donated roughly $13.1 million to the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation. Mr. Clinton attends Mr. Pinchuk’s annual conferences in the resort city of Yalta, Ukraine, and Mr. Pinchuk attended the former president’s 65th birthday party in Los Angeles.

He was first introduced to Mr. Clinton in 2004 by Mr. Schoen, a New York-based pollster who has advised both Clintons. Mr. Pinchuk immediately began building a friendship with the former president and enthusiastically donating to Mr. Clinton’s causes, including an H.I.V. program that was later expanded into Ukraine.

Mr. Schoen had been on a $40,000-per-month retainer as an adviser to Mr. Pinchuk since 2000. In 2011, Mr. Schoen, who had never previously done any lobbying, registered as a lobbyist for him to set up meetings with Washington officials to discuss the political crisis in Ukraine.

The meetings Mr. Schoen scheduled were almost exclusively with senior officials at Mrs. Clinton’s State Department.

Mr. Schoen arranged roughly a dozen meetings with State Department officials from September 2011 to November 2012 on behalf of or with Mr. Pinchuk. At times those meetings overlapped with Mr. Pinchuk’s other involvements with the Clintons. For instance, in 2012, Mr. Pinchuk took a break from the Clinton Global Initiative to meet upstairs in a hotel suite with Melanne Verveer, a close aide to Mrs. Clinton and ambassador at large for global women’s issues at the State Department.

There is no evidence that Mr. Pinchuk or Mr. Schoen discussed anything other than the political crisis in Ukraine with the State Department, or that any United States officials tried to influence the trade case.

“My lobbying work for Mr. Pinchuk was undertaken and designed solely and specifically to resolve an ongoing crisis in Ukraine that rages to this day, and had absolutely nothing to do with commerce, mercantile activity or business,” Mr. Schoen said.

Ms. Verveer, a Ukrainian-American who served as Mrs. Clinton’s chief of staff in the White House, also said she and Mr. Pinchuk discussed democratization in Ukraine, “a subject I have cared about for many, many years.”

The Clintons have been vocal advocates of Mr. Pinchuk’s long-held cause of strengthening Ukraine’s ties to Europe and the United States. In September, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton made a quick trip to Yalta to attend the Yalta European Strategy meeting, a conference Mr. Pinchuk hosts each year at Livadia Palace, the last Russian czar’s summer retreat on the Black Sea.

Mr. Pinchuk opened a talk at the event with Mr. Clinton and former Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain and introduced Mrs. Clinton, whom he called a “real, real megastar” before she delivered a keynote address about strengthening Ukraine’s economic ties to the West.

Mrs. Clinton roused the crowd when she praised Ukraine’s “excellent chocolate,” a reference to the Ukrainian products the Kremlin had banned.

“Our relationship is about philanthropy, about Ukraine,” Mr. Pinchuk said in an interview.

“If I discussed my business it would totally destroy my relationship and they would think I have some other hidden interest,” he added.

He said he did talk about the anti-dumping suit with John F. Tefft and Geoffrey R. Pyatt, the former and current American ambassadors to Ukraine.

In November, around the time analysts from Fitch downgraded Interpipe, citing the anti-dumping suit and the company’s missing a $106 million debt payment, Mr. Pyatt visited a new Interpipe factory in the industrial town of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. He told reporters he was “deeply impressed” with the eco-friendly metallurgical mill.

Continue reading the main storyWrite A Comment

While the American steel companies complain that Interpipe and others are threatening a rare vibrant part of manufacturing here by flooding the market with cheaper steel products, foreign steel makers say increased duties on imports ultimately hurt American manufacturing by making its materials more expensive.

And free trade advocates say the proposed duties would be counter to the State Department’s broad policy position that Ukraine ought to increase economic ties with the West.

“It’s quite absurd that when Russia pursues trade sanctions against Ukraine” the United States objects, but the Commerce Department is considering similar duties, said Anders Aslund, an economist with the Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics, where Mr. Pinchuk sits on the board.

Correction: February 14, 2014 Because of an editing error, an article on Thursday about the Ukrainian oligarch Victor Pinchuk, a wealthy backer of Hillary Rodham Clinton, misstated the type of factory that was visited by Geoffrey R. Pyatt, the ambassador to Ukraine. It is a metallurgical mill, not a meteorological mill.

US and EU Brazen Intervention in Ukraine

By F. William Engdahlauthor of  Full Spectrum Dominance: Totalitarian Democracy in the New World Order

In the heat of recent exchanges and deaths of protesters in Ukraine many have lost sight of the insidious role key players in Washington and certain EU countries are playing. Their agenda seems to be to force an immediate end of the elected Yanukovich government in Kiev and lock Ukraine into the EU and, ultimately, NATO. Washington’s agenda has little to do with “democracy and freedom,” and a lot to do with destabilizing Putin’s Russia.

On Sunday, January 19, the eight-week-long series of protests and demonstrations against the government of President Viktor Yanukovych in Kiev escalated to a new level of violence. Bands of neo-nazi rightwing militants called Pravy Sektor (Right Sector), attacked Ukrainian police guarding government buildings and attempting to contain the protesters.

engeng

Para-military trained neo-nazi rightists called Pravy Sektor or Right Sector in Ukraine have taken over the protests and launched a full-scale guerilla war against the government security police.

Enter the Neo-Nazis

Demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails at riot police from the top of the Dynamo Kiev football stadium in central Kiev beginning January 19. Police responded by using stun grenades and tear gas against the mobs. Vehicles were torched by the hooligans from the neo-nazi Pravy Sektor. More than sixty police were hospitalized from barrages of rocks, stones and Molotov cocktails.[1]

The core of Pravy sektor is made of the activists of radical groups, including ‘Trizub’, ‘Patriot of Ukraine’, as well as UNA-UNSO and the ‘Svoboda’ (Freedom) ultra-right party, which won nearly 10 percent of votes at the last parliamentary election in Ukraine. They are “pro-EU.” [2]

The far-right violent radicals told Radio Free Europe, a US Government media agency tied to the CIA and State Department, that they were preparing full bloody guerilla war against the government. Andrei Tarasenko, Pravy Sektor’s coordinator warned, “If they attack and try to carry out a bloody crackdown, I think there will be a massacre. Guerilla warfare will begin in Ukraine.” [3]

Tarasenko stated that their “demands” are to oust the current government and “build a nation state” in Ukraine. What kind of nation state we must imagine. They also demand that Yanukovych step down, but, generously enough, add that they would give him and his family “24 hours to leave the country safely.” On their social network VKontakte website, the organization calls for donations of items such as slingshots, steel balls, gasoline, laser pointers, glass bottles, chains, and pyrotechnics.[4]

Their published Manifesto is nothing short of bizarre: “All those who at this point would try to tame the revolutionary energy of the masses should be proclaimed traitors and punished in the most severe way. The time of peaceful singing and dancing at Maidan is over. This is waste of time. There can be no negotiations, no compromise with the ruling gang. We will carry high the fire of national revolution.” [5]

Curious is the fact that in the beginning of the protests, Pravy Sektor members were calling themselves ‘the Maidan self-defense force.’ They had been designated by the main opposition leaders – Vitaly Klitschko, Arseny Yatsenyuk and Oleg Tyagnibok–to provide the security of peaceful protestors. Now they clearly have split from the peaceful protests.[6]

Even more bizarre is the fact that in recent days ambassadors of several EU-member states, as well as the US and Canada have gone to Maidan to meet Pravy Sektor activists and learn how ‘the headquarters of national resistance’ operates.

Instead of unequivocally condemning the rise of violent Ukrainian nationalism, which could turn Ukraine into another Yugoslavia or Libya, the West is only threatening President Yanukovich with sanctions, while turning a blind eye to the Pravy Sektor real danger. [7]

Boxer Klitschko Favorite of West

The Tarasenko demands are virtually the same as ex-boxer-turned right-wing politician, Vitali Klitschko, the pro-EU apparent favorite of Germany’s Merkel government. Klitschko has lived in Germany for the past years.

The nominal reason for the latest explosive protests in Ukraine was passage of a series of emergency laws to control the civil disorder by the Parliament on January 16 which, among other things, restrict the right to protest, constrain independent media, and inhibit the operation of NGOs.

Evidence suggests that key players in the Ukraine protest movement are being steered and orchestrated by Washington-funded NGO’s like National Endowment for Democracy, the German Marshall Fund in The United States, a Washington think-tank financed by a donation of the German Parliament, and certain key neo-conservative Bush-Cheney leftovers in senior positions at the State Department.

Already in October, 11, 2011, the German Marshall Fund hosted Vitali Klitschko, then WBC heavyweight boxing champion just entering Ukraine’s political boxing ring to a Washington meeting to discuss Ukraine’s European perspective. [8]

Again in 2012 during the October Ukraine elections The German Marshall Fund in the United States hosted a top-level group of UK, French and German journalists to visit Ukraine, where they also met Klitschko. The Marshall Fund journalists  were told by the US Embassy officials in Kiev that, “Ukrainian oligarchs would like to see a strong opposition to the Party of Regions in the new parliament in order to temper the enrichment of President’s Yanukovich family.” [9]

That “strong opposition” is today headed by three very different political parties. One, which won a shocking 10% in the last elections and sits in Parliament, is Svoboda, a neo-fascist nationalist party led by Oleg Tyagnibok. Tyagnibok backed the US-financed 2004 Orange Revolution. He is openly anti-semitic and anti-Russian, once claiming that Ukraine was ruled by a “Moscow-Jewish mafia.” [10] The second largest opposition party, jailed opposition figure, Julya Tymoshenko’s  ”Fatherland,” led by Arseny Yatsenyuk, has signed an agreement to work with the neo-fascist Svoboda party. [11]

The opposition figure most attractive to the West is ex-boxer Klitschko, head of UDAR, the smallest opposition party, who has spent the last years living in Germany. In order to have a chance at a Parliamentary majority in 2015, Klitschko will be forced to make a coalition with Svoboda and its policies, even though he is trying a delicate tightrope act of claiming to distance from Svoboda’s anti-semitic ultra-nationalism.

In an OpEd in the London Financial Times, Klitschko wrote, “the official halt in Ukraine’s European integration unmasks the true face” of the Yanukovych regime—“a cartel of commercial self-interests that has captured public office and believes that political longevity can be bought by selling Ukraine’s interests.” Ukrainians, he warned, would not allow Yanukovych “and his cronies to steal their future” and if their views were not taken into account, “more protests are yet to come.” [12]

A central role in encouraging the Ukraine protestors is being played by the US State Department and especially Victoria Nuland.

State Department’s Role

A review of the official statements from Nuland, who met personally with opposition leader Klitschko in early December, is instructive of the open interference of Washington in the internal affairs of Ukraine. Nuland, Hillary Clinton’s appointee who now is Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs in the State Department, did not respect a sovereign decision by Ukraine’s government in November 2013 not to accept the dismal terms offered by Brussels for a Ukrainian EU “Association” status.

The EU “offer” would have forced Ukraine to open its economy to “free market” rules in return for little. When Yanukovych told the EU of his government’s decision in November, Nuland’s spokesperson issued the statement: “We continue to support the aspirations of the Ukrainian people to achieve a prosperous European democracy. European integration is the surest course to economic growth and strengthening Ukraine’s democracy.” [13] That was an undiplomatic intervention on the side of the protestors designed to embolden the opposition. It did indeed.

Then on December 5 in Kiev after her meeting with Vitali Klitschko, Nuland declared, “There should be no doubt about where the United States stands on this. We stand with the people of Ukraine who see their future in Europe…” [14]

She followed her speech with a high-profile bizarre media photo-op where she carried a single plastic bag of food to give to the opposition demonstrators. Nuland’s partisan pro-EU comments were followed by a brazen appearance from Republican warhawk Senator John McCain a few days later, siding with the opposition in December. McCain is chairman of the Board of National Endowment for Democracy’s International Republican Institute, which has been in the middle of all US Color Revolution destabilizations since 2000.[15]

Most recently, on January 15, after attacking Russia for granting a vital $15 billion bond purchase to help stabilize Ukraine, Nuland all but outlined the standard US government template for election tampering that has been done in countless “color revolutions” since the NED’s 2000 coup against Yugoslavia’s Milosevoc. She told the US Senate, “the use of violence and acts of repression carried out by government security forces and their surrogates have compelled us to make clear publicly and privately to the government of Ukraine that we will consider a broad range of tools at our disposal if those in positions of authority in Ukraine employ or encourage violence against their own citizens.” [16]

She then issued a direct order to President Yanukovych, “we call on him to make it credible through concrete actions to restore government accountability, rule of law and engagement with Europe and the IMF.” And finally, referencing planned 2015 national Ukraine elections, she added, “US pre-election assistance to Ukraine likely will include programs to support citizen oversight of the campaign environment and the conduct of the elections, independent media coverage and informed civic awareness and participation.” And finally, “the State Department and USAID are reviewing how best to support Ukrainian civil society and media.” [17] USAID is widely cited as a cover for CIA operations in foreign countries.

Victoria Nuland herself is a former assistant to Vice President Dick Cheney, and married to neo-conservative guru, Robert Kagan. She was under fire when caught recently lying to the American people when she was Hillary Clinton’s State Department spokesperson. Nuland pushed her superiors then to completely delete numerous references of extremists linked to al-Qaeda in Benghazi and eastern Libya after the assassination of the US Ambassador. She also persuaded more senior officials to delete information on at least five other attacks against foreign interests in Benghazi by unidentified assailants. [18]

On January 31, Secretary of State Kerry continued the brazen interference into Ukraine politics. Referring to a series of compromises from the Government in Kiev, Kerry remarked that the reforms had to make the opposition “feel that it could legitimately come to the table and form some kind of a unity government.” He made the comments en route to Munich where he would meet opposition leaders. [19] Did Kerry blindly take his cue from Nuland, the person responsible for the State Ukraine dossier?

Washington is clearly out to destabilize the new Ukraine-Russia economic cooperation by hook or crook. On January 22, after the severe Pravy Sektor violence, the American Embassy in Kiev announced it was revoking the visas of several unnamed Ukraine Government officials responsible for actions taken against protesters in November and December.[20]

Negotiations

The latest negotiations between the Yanukovych government and the three main opposition party leaders—Klitschko, Arseniy Yatseniuk, Chairman of the United Opposition “Batkivshina,” and Svoboda, led by Oleg Tyagnibok—have led to the resignation of Yanukovych’s Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov and his cabinet, and changes in the emergency laws proposed ten days earlier. Nine out of 12 anti-protest laws passed January 16 were canceled. [21]

At this point, whatever agenda Victoria Nuland’s State Department may have had in trying to woo Ukraine away from Moscow, the internal forces of instability, egged on by vocal support from the West, have made the outcome incalculable. That is certainly not in the true interest of the EU, having a critical Central European nation of 45 million ungovernable, and a rising nationalist fascist Svoboda-led party calling the shots. That would prove too much even for the legendary boxing talent of Klitschko.

… by  F. William Engdahl,   27 February 2014

Meet a new Amerian ally

[ Editors Note: Mr. Engdahl brings us a timely and background filled article on the fast moving target that the Ukraine story has become.

Corporate media has been in the bag all the way on this one, hiding all the relationships they don't want us to see, and then putting out reams of Russia bashing propaganda to flea train us to respond accordingly.

It may be time for us to require all mass media to have to disclose on their main stories what major Intel agency has asked them to push a particular story line. Those who don't know the Mossad assets operating right out of their editorial offices, like in Canada, we will be happy to point out a few to them, like the big one in Toronto.

You will read below that this subversion of the Ukraine has been many years in the making, and with some very slimy people involved. And Obama has some explaining to do as to why he has taken over the Bush (43) NeoCon coup offensive foreign policy attacks on these countries.

This is a campaign that the American people have been hoodwinked on. We find the same Congressional people involved who always rubber stamp AIPAC proposals, and we find pro-Israeli Jewish State Department people always showing up in the key positions creating mayhem which is at the top of the Likud Parties 'to do' list.

And yes, AIPAC does moonlight to help cover expenses by running a 'Rent-a-Congressman' operation...the 'anything goes' kind. Check the itinerary of shills like Senator John McQaeda and you will have a good example to follow.

A career analysis of many of these top State Dept. people shows the typical deep infiltration background grooming done during the Cold War, top schooling, Intel teams working on thesis work, mentoring, and ghost writing books for them, and rigged top scholarship 'awards'.

'Marching for _______?"

All this ‘prep work’ sets them up for top government interning slots, and then out to some think tank resume polishing, where media friends build up recognition for them as up and coming talent.

But it is all an Intel operation to move them into a key slot during an administration turnover.

Democrat or Republican makes no difference as there are separate bull pens for each. When one party is out of power, these folks just retreat to their think tank safe-havens to wait for the next turnover.

If you think our government belongs to you, then you are sleep-walking. It doesn’t, and everyone in Congress knows it. They are all play acting, but we don’t have to play along… Jim W. Dean ]

Russsians will no longer be reactive, but proactive

The events in Ukraine since November 2013 are so astonishing as almost to defy belief. An legitimately-elected (said by all international monitors) Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovich, has been driven from office, forced to flee as a war criminal after more than three months of violent protest and terrorist killings by so-called opposition.

His “crime” according to protest leaders was that he rejected an EU offer of a vaguely-defined associate EU membership that offered little to Ukraine in favor of a concrete deal with Russia that gave immediate €15 billion debt relief and a huge reduction in Russian gas import prices. Washington at that point went into high gear and the result today is catastrophe.

A secretive neo-nazi military organization reported linked to NATO played a decisive role in targeted sniper attacks and violence that led to the collapse of the elected government. But the West is not finished with destroying Ukraine. Now comes the IMF with severe conditionalities as prerequisite to any Western financial help.

After the famous leaked phone call of US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland with the US Ambassador in Kiev, where she discussed the details of who she wanted in a new coalition government in Kiev, and where she rejected the EU solutions with her “Fuck the EU” comment,i the EU went it alone.

Germany’s Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier proposed that he and his French counterpart, Laurent Fabius, fly to Kiev and try to reach a resolution of the violence before escalation. Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski was asked to join. The talks in Kiev included the EU delegation, Yanukovich, the three opposition leaders and a Russian representative. The USA was not invited.ii

Once again we find the heavily infiltrated US State Dept having pro Israeli assets involved in regime change operations

The EU intervention without Washington was extraordinary and reveals the deeping division between the two in recent months. In effect it was the EU saying to the US State Department, “F*** the US,” we will end this ourselves.

After hard talks, all major parties including the majority of protesters, agreed to new presidential elections in December, return to the 2004 Constitution and release of Julia Tymoshenko from prison.

The compromise appeared to end the months long chaos and give a way out for all major players. The diplomatic compromise lasted less than twelve hours. Then all hell broke loose.

Snipers began shooting into the crowd on February 22 in Maidan or Independence Square. Panic ensued and riot police retreated in panic according to eyewitnesses. The opposition leader Vitali Klitschko withdrew from the deal, no reason given. Yanukovich fled Kiev.iii

The question unanswered until now is who deployed the snipers? According to veteran US intelligence sources, the snipers came from an ultra-right-wing military organization known as Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian People’s Self-Defense (UNA-UNSO).

Strange Ukraine ‘Nationalists’

Andriy Shkil

The leader of UNA-UNSO, Andriy Shkil, ten years ago became an adviser to Julia Tymoshenko. UNA-UNSO, during the US-instigated 2003-4 “Orange Revolution,” backed pro-NATO candidate Viktor Yushchenko against his pro-Russian opponent, Yanukovich.

UNA-UNSO members provided security for the supporters of Yushchenko and Julia Tymoshenko on Independence Square in Kiev in 2003-4.iv

UNA-UNSO is also reported to have close ties to the German National Democratic Party (NDP). v

Ever since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 the crack-para-military UNA-UNSO members have been behind every revolt against Russian influence. The one connecting thread in their violent campaigns is always anti-Russia. The organization, according to veteran US intelligence sources, is part of a secret NATO “Gladio” organization, and not a Ukraine nationalist group as portrayed in western media. vi

According to these sources, UNA-UNSO have been involved (confirmed officially) in the Lithuanian events in the Winter of 1991, the Soviet Coup d’etat in Summer 1991, the war for the Pridnister Republic 1992, the anti-Moscow Abkhazia War 1993, the Chechen War, the US-organized Kosovo Campaign Against the Serbs, and the August 8 2008 war in Georgia.

According to these reports, UNA-UNSO para-military have been involved in every NATO dirty war in the post-cold war period, always fighting on behalf of NATO. “These people are the dangerous mercenaries used all over the world to fight NATO’s dirty war, and to frame Russia because this group pretends to be Russian special forces. THESE ARE THE BAD GUYS, forget about the window dressing nationalists, these are the men behind the sniper rifles,” these sources insist. vii

US State Dept. and John McCain of course, recruiting Ukranian Nazis for new terror destabilization programs

If true that UNA-UNSO is not “Ukrainian” opposition, but rather a highly secret NATO force using Ukraine as base, it would suggest that the EU peace compromise with the moderates was likely sabotaged by the one major player excluded from the Kiev 21 February diplomatic talks—Victoria Nuland’s State Department.viii

Both Nuland and right-wing Republican US Senator John McCain have had contact with the leader of the Ukrainian opposition Svoboda Party, whose leader is openly anti-semitic and defends the deeds of a World War II Ukrainian SS-Galicia Division head.ix

The party was registered in 1995, initially calling itself the “Social National Party of Ukraine” and using a swastika style logo. Svoboda is the electoral front for neo-nazi organizations in Ukraine such as UNA-UNSO.x

One further indication that Nuland’s hand is shaping latest Ukraine events is the fact that the new Ukrainian Parliament is expected to nominate Nuland’s choice, Arseny Yatsenyuk, from Tymoshenko’s party, to be interim head of the new Cabinet.

Whatever the final truth, clear is that Washington has prepared a new economic rape of Ukraine using its control over the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

IMF plunder of Ukraine Crown Jewels

America's new Allies - the new Ukranian SS

Now that the “opposition” has driven a duly-elected president into exile somewhere unknown, and dissolved the national riot police, Berkut, Washington has demanded that Ukraine submit to onerous IMF conditionalities.

In negotiations last October, the IMF demanded that Ukraine double prices for gas and electricity to industry and homes, that they lift a ban on private sale of Ukraine’s rich agriculture lands, make a major overhaul of their economic holdings, devalue the currency, slash state funds for school children and the elderly to “balance the budget.” In return Ukraine would get a paltry $4 billion.

Before the ouster of the Moscow-leaning Yanukovich government last week, Moscow was prepared to buy some $15 billion of Ukraine debt and to slash its gas prices by fully one-third. Now, understandably, Russia is unlikely to give that support.

The economic cooperation between Ukraine and Moscow was something Washington was determined to sabotage at all costs. This drama is far from over. The stakes involve the very future of Russia, the EU-Russian relations, and the global power of Washington, or at least that faction in Washington that sees further wars as the prime instrument of policy.

Pierre Omidyar co-funded Ukraine revolution groups with US government, documents show

By On February 28, 2014

centeruatop Just hours after last weekend’s ouster of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, one of Pierre Omidyar’s newest hires at national security blog “The Intercept,” was already digging for the truth.

Marcy Wheeler, who is the new site’s “senior policy analyst,” speculated that the Ukraine revolution was likely a “coup” engineered by “deep” forces on behalf of “Pax Americana”:

“There’s quite a bit of evidence of coup-ness. Q is how many levels deep interference from both sides is.”

These are serious claims. So serious that I decided to investigate them. And what I found was shocking.

Wheeler is partly correct. Pando has confirmed that the American government – in the form of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) – played a major role in funding opposition groups prior to the revolution. Moreover, a large percentage of the rest of the funding to those same groups came from a US billionaire who has previously worked closely with US government agencies to further his own business interests. This was by no means a US-backed “coup,” but clear evidence shows that US investment was a force multiplier for many of the groups involved in overthrowing Yanukovych.

But that’s not the shocking part.

What’s shocking is the name of the billionaire who co-invested with the US government (or as Wheeler put it: the “dark deep force” acting on behalf of “Pax Americana”).

Step out of the shadows…. Wheeler’s boss, Pierre Omidyar.

Yes, in the annals of independent media, this might be the strangest twist ever: According to financial disclosures and reports seen by Pando, the founder and publisher of Glenn Greenwald’s government-bashing blog,“The Intercept,” co-invested with the US government to help fund regime change in Ukraine.

[Update: Wheeler has responded on Twitter to say that her Tweets were taken out of context, but would not give specifics. Adam Colligan, with whom Wheeler was debating, commented on Pando that "while Wheeler did raise the issue of external interference in relation to a discussion about a coup, it was not really at all in the manner that you have portrayed." Further "[Pax Americana] appeared after the conversation had shifted from the idea of whether a coup had been staged by the Ukrainian Parliament to a question about the larger powers’ willingness to weaken underlying economic conditions in a state.” Neither Wheeler or Colligan has commented on the main subject of the story: Pierre Omidyar’s co-investment in Ukrainian opposition groups with the US government.]

* * * *

When the revolution came to Ukraine, neo-fascists played a front-center role in overthrowing the country’s president. But the real political power rests with Ukraine’s pro-western neoliberals. Political figures like Oleh Rybachuk, long a favorite of the State Department, DC neocons, EU, and NATO—and the right-hand man to Orange Revolution leader Viktor Yushchenko.

Last December, the Financial Times wrote that Rybachuk’s “New Citizen” NGO campaign “played a big role in getting the protest up and running.”

New Citizen, along with the rest of Rybachuk’s interlocking network of western-backed NGOs and campaigns— “Center UA” (also spelled “Centre UA”), “Chesno,” and “Stop Censorship” to name a few — grew their power by targeting pro-Yanukovych politicians with a well-coordinated anti-corruption campaign that built its strength in Ukraine’s regions, before massing in Kiev last autumn.

The efforts of the NGOs were so successful that the Ukraine government was accused of employing dirty tricks to shut them down. In early February, the groups were the subject of a massive money laundering investigation by the economics division of Ukraine’s Interior Ministry in what many denounced as a politically motivated move.

Fortunately the groups had the strength – which is to say, money – to survive those attacks and continue pushing for regime change in Ukraine. The source of that money?

According to the Kyiv Post, Pierrie Omidyar’s Omidyar Network (part of the Omidyar Group which owns First Look Media and the Intercept) provided 36% of “Center UA”’s $500,000 budget in 2012— nearly $200,000. USAID provided 54% of “Center UA”’s budget for 2012. Other funders included the US government-backed National Endowment for Democracy.

In 2011, Omidyar Network gave $335,000 to “New Citizen,” one of the anti-Yanukovych “projects” managed through the Rybachuk-chaired NGO “Center UA.” At the time, Omidyar Network boasted that its investment in “New Citizen” would help “shape public policy” in Ukraine:

“Using technology and media, New Citizen coordinates the efforts of concerned members of society, reinforcing their ability to shape public policy.

“… With support from Omidyar Network, New Citizen will strengthen its advocacy efforts in order to drive greater transparency and engage citizens on issues of importance to them.”

In March 2012, Rybachuk — the operator behind the 2004 Orange Revolution scenes, the Anatoly Chubais of Ukraine — boasted that he was preparing a new Orange Revolution:

“People are not afraid. We now have 150 NGOs in all the major cities in our ‘clean up Parliament campaign’ to elect and find better parliamentarians….The Orange Revolution was a miracle, a massive peaceful protest that worked. We want to do that again and we think we will.

Detailed financial records reviewed by Pando (and embedded below) also show Omidyar Network covered costs for the expansion of Rybachuk’s anti-Yanukovych campaign, “Chesno” (“Honestly”), into regional cities including Poltava, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Ternopil, Sumy, and elsewhere, mostly in the Ukrainian-speaking west and center.

* * * *

To understand what it means for Omidyar to fund Oleh Rybachuk, some brief history is necessary. Rybachuk’s background follows a familiar pattern in post-Soviet opportunism: From well-connected KGB intelligence ties, to post-Soviet neoliberal networker.

In the Soviet era, Rybachuk studied in a military languages program half of whose graduates went on to work for the KGB. Rybachuk’s murky overseas posting in India in the late Soviet era further strengthens many suspicions about his Soviet intelligence ties; whatever the case, by Rybachuk’s own account, his close ties to top intelligence figures in the Ukrainian SBU served him well during the Orange Revolution of 2004, when the SBU passed along secret information about vote fraud and assassination plots.

In 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Rybachuk moved to the newly-formed Ukraine Central Bank, heading the foreign relations department under Central Bank chief and future Orange Revolution leader Viktor Yushchenko. In his central bank post, Rybachuk established close friendly ties with western government and financial aid institutions, as well as proto-Omidyar figures like George Soros, who funded many of the NGOs involved in “color revolutions” including small donations to the same Ukraine NGOs that Omidyar backed. (Like Omidyar Network does today, Soros’ charity arms—Open Society and Renaissance Foundation—publicly preached transparency and good government in places like Russia during the Yeltsin years, while Soros’ financial arm speculated on Russian debt and participated in scandal-plagued auctions of state assets.)

In early 2005, Orange Revolution leader Yushchenko became Ukraine’s president, and he appointed Rybachuk deputy prime minister in charge of integrating Ukraine into the EU, NATO, and other western institutions. Rybachuk also pushed for the mass-privatization of Ukraine’s remaining state holdings.

Over the next several years, Rybachuk was shifted around President Yushchenko’s embattled administration, torn by internal divisions. In 2010, Yushchenko lost the presidency to recently-overthrown Viktor Yanukovych, and a year later, Rybachuk was on Omidyar’s and USAID’s payroll, preparing for the next Orange Revolution. As Rybachuk told the Financial Times two years ago:

“We want to do [the Orange Revolution] again and we think we will.”

Some of Omidyar’s funds were specifically earmarked for covering the costs of setting up Rybachuk’s “clean up parliament” NGOs in Ukraine’s regional centers. Shortly after the Euromaidan demonstrations erupted last November, Ukraine’s Interior Ministry opened up a money laundering investigation into Rybachuk’s NGOs, dragging Omidyar’s name into the high-stakes political struggle.

According to a Kyiv Post article on February 10 titled, “Rybachuk: Democracy-promoting nongovernmental organization faces ‘ridiculous’ investigation”:

“Police are investigating Center UA, a public-sector watchdog funded by Western donors, on suspicion of money laundering, the group said. The group’s leader, Oleh Rybachuk, said it appears that authorities, with the probe, are trying to warn other nongovernmental organizations that seek to promote democracy, transparency, free speech and human rights in Ukraine.

“According to Center UA, the Kyiv economic crimes unit of the Interior Ministry started the investigation on Dec. 11. Recently, however, investigators stepped up their efforts, questioning some 200 witnesses.

“… Center UA received more than $500,000 in 2012, according to its annual report for that year, 54 percent of which came from Pact Inc., a project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development. Nearly 36 percent came from Omidyar Network, a foundation established by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife. Other donors include the International Renaissance Foundation, whose key funder is billionaire George Soros, and National Endowment for Democracy, funded largely by the U.S. Congress.”

* * * *

What all this adds up to is a journalistic conflict-of-interest of the worst kind: Omidyar working hand-in-glove with US foreign policy agencies to interfere in foreign governments, co-financing regime change with well-known arms of the American empire — while at the same time hiring a growing team of soi-disant ”independent journalists” which vows to investigate the behavior of the US government at home and overseas, and boasts of its uniquely “adversarial” relationship towards these  government institutions.

As First Look staffer Jeremy Scahill told the Daily Beast

We had a long discussion about this internally; about what our position would be if the White House asked us to not publish something…. With us, because we want to be adversarial, they won’t know what bat phone to call. They know who to call at The Times, they know who to call at The Post. With us, who are they going to call? Pierre? Glenn?

Of the many problems that poses, none is more serious than the fact that Omidyar now has the only two people with exclusive access to the complete Snowden NSA cache, Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras. Somehow, the same billionaire who co-financed the “coup” in Ukraine with USAID, also has exclusive access to the NSA secrets—and very few in the independent media dare voice a skeptical word about it.

In the larger sense, this is a problem of 21st century American inequality, of life in a billionaire-dominated era. It is a problem we all have to contend with—PandoDaily’s 18-plus investors include a gaggle of Silicon Valley billionaires like Marc Andreessen (who serves on the board of eBay, chaired by Pierre Omidyar) and Peter Thiel (whose politics I’ve investigated, and described as repugnant.)

But what is more immediately alarming is what makes Omidyar different. Unlike other billionaires, Omidyar has garnered nothing but uncritical, fawning press coverage, particularly from those he has hired. By acquiring a “dream team” of what remains of independent media — Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill, Wheeler, my former partner Matt Taibbi — not to mention press “critics” like Jay Rosen — he buys both silence and fawning press.

Both are incredibly useful: Silence, an absence of journalistic curiosity about Omidyar’s activities overseas and at home, has been purchased for the price of whatever his current all-star indie cast currently costs him. As an added bonus, that same investment buys silence from exponentially larger numbers of desperately underpaid independent journalists hoping to someday be on his payroll, and the underfunded media watchdogs that survive on Omidyar Network grants.

And it also buys laughable fluff from the likes of Scahill who also boasted to the Daily Beast of his boss’ close involvement in the day to day running of First Look.

“[Omidyar] strikes me as always sort of political, but I think that the NSA story and the expanding wars put politics for him into a much more prominent place in his existence. This is not a side project that he is doing. Pierre writes more on our internal messaging than anyone else. And he is not micromanaging. This guy has a vision. And his vision is to confront what he sees as an assault on the privacy of Americans.”

Now Wheeler has her answer — that, yes, the revolutionary groups were part-funded by Uncle Sam, but also by her boss — one assumes awkward follow up questions will be asked on that First Look internal messaging system.

Whether Wheeler, Scahill and their colleagues go on to share their concerns publicly will speak volumes about First Look’s much-trumpeted independence, both from Omidyar’s other business interests and from Omidyar’s co-investors in Ukraine: the US government.

Editor’s note: Pando contacted Omidyar Networks for comment prior to publication but had not received a response by press time. We will update this post if they do respond.

Update: First Look staffer, Glenn Greenwald, has responded to Pando’s report here. Paul Carr, the editor of the above report, has written a follow-up here.

BFP Breaking News- Omidyar’s PayPal Corporation Said To Be Implicated in Withheld NSA Documents

| December 11, 201338 Comments
The U.S. Government, An Implicated Billionaire, Fortune-Seeking Journalists &        A Public in the DarkUpdate 2: Glenn Greenwald Goes on Record: “I Don’t Doubt PayPal Cooperates with NSA!”

Update 1: Verbatim Copy of Mr. Binney’s Statement

The 50,000-pages of documents obtained by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden contain extensive documentation of PayPal Corporation’s partnership and cooperation with the National Security Agency (NSA), according to three NSA veterans. To date, no information has been released as to the extent of the working relationship and cooperation between the two entities- NSA and PayPal Corporation. What’s more, the billionaire owner of PayPal Corporation has entered into a $250 Million business partnership with two journalists-Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras, a journalist duo who possess the entire cache of evidence provided by Edward Snowden. Despite earlier pledges by the journalists in question, only one percent (1%) of Snowden’s documents has been released.

BFP was recently contacted by a retired NSA official who claims that the documents obtained by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden contain extensive documentation pertaining to NSA’s partnership with major U.S. financial institutions, including credit card companies and PayPal Corporation. The official, who requested anonymity, also alleges that a deal was made in early June, 2013 between the journalists involved in this recent NSA scandal and U.S. government officials, which was then sealed by secrecy and nondisclosure agreements by all parties involved.

Upon receiving this report BFP contacted three other high-level former NSA officials for additional information and comments.

On December 11, 2013 we contacted Mr. William Binney, a former top official at the National Security Agency (NSA), and asked him to comment on the legitimacy of the above report, and whether he had any knowledge of the partnership and cooperation between NSA and financial institutions such as PayPal. He confirmed the legitimacy of the report and added:

The NSA has had the cooperation of major financial institutions, including credit card companies,  to obtain all financial transactions of these companies’ clients-international and domestic. Further, the NSA not only obtains and stores the financial data of Americans and foreigners, but it also shares them with other government agencies such as the FBI and DEA.

When asked about the apparent conflict of interest and controversy involving the new business venture between the journalists in question and PayPal’s billionaire owner Pierre Omidyar, he had the following statement:

Sunlight, transparency, is the only cure; the only way to bring about needed changes. This is why the public is entitled to have all the evidence and documents. The partnership with PayPal’s owner, thus, the new ownership of Mr. Snowden’s documents by an individual who is implicated in these documents, presents grave concerns and consequences, and a major conflict of interest for transparency, integrity and whistleblowers.

Russell Tice, a former NSA Intelligence Analyst and Capabilities Operations Officer, also confirmed the report, and stated that based on his knowledge, NSA regularly obtains financial information from major financial institutions, including credit card companies and PayPal. In January 2009, during an interview with Keith Olberman, he stated that information from credit card records and other financial transaction was being collected and stored by NSA (See the interview here).

On December 10, 2013, in an exclusive interview with BFP, Mr. Tice expanded upon the NSA-Financial Institutions collusion:

For NSA, information from financial institutions such as PayPal is equally if not more valuable and sought after than that obtained from social media and other software companies such as Facebook, Microsoft and Google.” He added, “I wouldn’t doubt the existence of evidence and documents implicating corporations such as PayPal within the large cache obtained by Edward Snowden. The partnership and data collection arrangements have existed for many years.”

When asked about his opinion on Glenn Greenwald’s new $250 Million venture partnership with PayPal Corporation’s billionaire owner Pierre Omidyar, multi-million dollar book and movie deals, and recent unexplained immunity from the U.S. government, he stated the following:

“I would be outraged and highly vocal if I were in Edward Snowden’s shoes. For a journalist whom I had placed my trust in to go and withhold documents meant for the public?!  For the journalist to make fortune and fame based on my sacrifices and disclosure?!  Forming a lucrative business partnership with entities who have direct conflicts of interest?! No. That wouldn’t have been acceptable.”

Despite our submitted requests for confirmation, denial or comments, PayPal has refrained from responding to this report and contained allegations.

Other whistleblowers from the intelligence community have also expressed grave concerns over the serious implications of the recent venture partnership between journalist Glenn Greenwald and PayPal owner Pierre Omidyar. Indeed, the journalists in question have decided to hold back the release of the remaining 99% of the whistleblower’s documents, and have been inconsistent and vague as to when and how much they intend to release further documents. Their decision to withhold the majority of the documents appears to coincide with their new $250 million business venture with PayPal’s Omidyar, and recent mega-bucks book and movie deals.

Crytome.Org’s John Young, whom we sought comments from for this news story, considers the claims by these former NSA insiders valid and legitimate:

Government access to financial transactions has always been top priority for all government agencies, worldwide. Nothing is more important to governments than where the money is, especially money for taxation required to avoid death-stake in the heart of governments. So it is consistent that NSA (and other spies) have access to all on- and off-line financial services providers. As you know, financial services are required to cooperate with their governments, perhaps second only to defense industries, perhaps first due to the need to track worldwide arms sales. Control of arms means control of wealth, and nothing is more appreciated by the few wealthy to offload arms cost to millions of taxpayers.

We asked Mr. Young how he viewed the implications of the same billionaire who is allegedly implicated in these documents, buying out the involved reporters (both of them) and getting ownership of the whistleblower’s leaked documents:

Billionaires are as obliged as financial services to cooperate with governments in order to protect their wealth and to guard against excessive taxation, expropriation, confiscation, prosecution, stigmatization and exclusion from government contracts. Cooperation with governments is essential for wealth accumulation, the greater the wealth the greater the cooperation… Whistleblowing on the whistleblowing industry is overdue, but that will take courage and ingenuity to avoid appearing to have been taken over by those expecting to avoid full disclosure.

Here is what WikiLeaks had to say about Pierre Omidyar and his PayPal Corporation’s war on whistleblowers:

“How can you take something seriously when the person behind this platform went along with the financial boycott against WikiLeaks?” Harrison was referring to the decision in December 2010 by PayPal, which is owned by eBay, to suspend WikiLeaks’ donation account and freeze its assets after pressure from the US government. The company’s boycott, combined with similar action taken by Visa and Mastercard, left WikiLeaks facing a funding crisis.

“His excuse is probably that there is nothing he could have done at the time,” Harrison continued. “Well, he is on the board of directors. He can’t shake off responsibility that easily. He didn’t even comment on it. He could have said something like: ‘we were forced to do this, but I am against it’.”

Whistleblower William Russell, who served with the NSA, U.S. Secret Service, and as an officer and transport pilot with the U.S. Marine Corps, had the following reaction to this exploitive PayPal-Journalist-Government collusion:

I completely agree with these whistleblowers. This is a major conflict of interest and highly convoluted. Omidyar has billions at stake if the details of his cooperation with government is ever exposed. So this guy pays $250 million and buys out the 2 journalists who have the entire cache?! Simply outrageous!”

Sibel Edmonds, the founder and director of National Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC) which represents over 150 government national security whistleblowers, states:

We have been told that these journalists have had over one hundred meetings with U.S. government officials in order to clear what “could be” or “could not be” released. That’s a fact, and it is highly disturbing. On one hand they say the government considers these documents and revelations highly classified and stolen property. Yet, we see a mainstream publisher offering millions of dollars to the journalist, and getting a ‘go ahead’ from the US government to publish it. We see a billionaire corporate man, never known for being pro civil liberties or Human Rights, and someone who is implicated in these illegal government activities paying off the journalists and getting ownership of the NSA documents. We see a government sanctioned Hollywood mega-million movie deal. We see lies, inconsistencies, contradictions, censorship, voluntary withholding, exploitation of a whistleblower … This smoke and mirrors filled fakery stinks to high heaven!

As stated by Guardian’s Rusbridger, who recently gave evidence to the British parliamentary committee about stories based on Snowden’s NSA leaks: Greenwald and the Guardian had consulted with government officials and intelligence agencies – including the FBI, GCHQ, the White House and the Cabinet Office – on more than 100 occasions before the publication of stories.

The enormous conflict of interest and ethical impropriety of PayPal owner Omidyar’s business venture with Glenn Greenwald, the journalist in possession of the documents, is not limited to PayPal being directly implicated in documents exposing NSA’s illegal activities and operations. There are other equally disturbing and outrageous facts that put in question the integrity of the journalists, including their sudden enormous gains, wealth, fame, and the apparent government’s consent.

There is documented evidence illustrating Pierre Omidyar’s historical attitude and position on publishers, reporters and whistleblowers who publicize incriminating government documents. Here is one, coming directly from billionaire Omidyar:

That’s right. The above twit was typed by Omidyar’s own fingers on July 16, 2009.

But please don’t be mistaken. Pierre Omidyar doesn’t only talk the talk. No sir, the man actually walks his talk. Slightly over a year after Omidyar made the above statement he engaged in the following action:

NEW YORK: US-based online payment service PayPal has decided to block financial transfers to WikiLeaks after governments around the world initiated legal action against the whistleblower website.

“PayPal has permanently restricted the account used by WikiLeaks due to a violation of the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, which states that our payment service cannot be used for any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity,” PayPal said in statement released late Friday.

Wikileaks was not the only whistleblower entity to fall victim to PayPal’s war on government whistleblowers’. In 2011, two years after freezing Wikileaks’ account, Omidyar’s PayPal cut off the account for Bradley Manning Support:

Glyn Moody now points us to the news that PayPal has also decided to cut off the group “Courage to Resist,” which was handling funds for Bradley Manning’s defense effort. PayPal admits there’s no legal basis for this. Apparently, the company just doesn’t believe that some people should be allowed a fair trial.

The report also notes that they’ve had a PayPal account in good standing since 2006, with no problems at all. It’s only once they were taking funds for Bradley Manning that PayPal shut them down. This is somewhat horrifying, frankly, and raises serious questions about PayPal as a business worth trusting.

Then, yet another recent example of violations inflicted by PayPal, this time upon Mailpile. Mailpile attempted to create a webmail client that is built with both security and usability in mind to counter government’s intrusions into hosted webmail accounts:

PayPal, for reasons known only to PayPal, has decided to freeze their funds and won’t let Mailpile access the money that people donated PayPal is demanding an insane level of detail into Mailpile’s personal finances and businessEven worse, it seems that the folks at PayPal recognize that it holds power over Mailpile, and seems almost to be lording that power over them

The history of the billionaire’s stand and actions, when it comes to liberties, whistleblowers and freedom of the press, seems to be limited to: opposing, fighting and quashing government whistleblowers at every chance. Simply put, Mr. Omidyar has been consistently maintaining his stand as a billionaire who is pro-government, anti-government whistleblowers, and against transparency.

Omidyar’s pro government and anti-whistleblowers philosophy and principles are shared equally when it comes to his partners and close associates. Here is Mr. Omidyar’s PayPal Partner and close friend- Max Levchin, who says that the NSA isn’t being evil, and that the agency’s violation is for our own good and protection from terrorists:

The NSA is designed to protect us from terrorism, so even if it oversteps its bounds, PayPal co-founder Max Levchin says we shouldn’t hate it. That’s diametrically opposed to the sentiment of many in the tech industry, including Michael Arrington who thinks the NSA’s spying doesn’t stop terrorism — it is terrorism.

“I think it’s ridiculous for a citizen of a country that view his government’s duty to protect me, protect all of us from evil, from harm, from terrorists, from foreign powers meaning ill — to classify a body of government that is designed to figure out what might hit us next and prevent it, throwing them into an evil bucket is just thoughtless.”

Let’s watch Pierre Omidyar’s PayPal partner and close friend in action, shall we?

PayPal Co-Founder Defends NSA Surveillance

This interview was conducted in the summer of 2013. This was right in the midst of the Edward Snowden and NSA Scandal. This is what Pierre Omidyar and his closest friend and PayPal partner believed then. And this is what they believe now. There has been no change either in Omidyar’s or his partner’s position and belief since. There has been zero indication of either of them seeing the light called civil liberties.

PayPal co-founder Max Levchin is not the only PayPal man who is pro-NSA illegal surveillance and corporate-government partnerships in targeting the population at large. Here are other PayPal Men and former partners who have been directly linked to government spying and surveillance operations, and of course, the CIA:

Palantir Technologies, a Silicon Valley firm, is, according to the tipster, providing the technology that enables the mass-surveillance NSA project known as PRISM.

Palantir (which, at time of writing, had not responded to requests for comment) was founded in 2004 by, among others, venture capitalist Peter Thiel and CEO Alex Karp. It’s a sort of second-party data intelligence company–it’s not a public company, but it was founded with early investment from the CIA and is heavily used by the military and the White House. Karp is an ex-PayPal guy, and leveraged his expertise in security he gained at PayPal (which was constantly fighting off hackers) into his new venture.

Here is more on this CIA Company and its originators, all from PayPal’s early days:

Palantir’s advisors include Condoleezza Rice and former CIA director George Tenet, who says in an interview that “I wish we had a tool of its power” before 9/11. General David Petraeus, the most recent former CIA chief, describes Palantir to FORBES as “a better mousetrap when a better mousetrap was needed” …

We must not forget PayPal’s position and its actual business goals. PayPal is an international e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. It operates in 190 markets and manages more than 232 million accounts, more than 100 million of them active. PayPal allows customers to send, receive, and hold funds in 26 currencies worldwide. It is subject to the US economic sanction list and subject to other rules and interventions required by US laws or the government. All that, and the fact that PayPal has always been a valuable asset and partner of the U.S. government, even when it comes to operations directed against the people’s rights and privacy.

Remember, NSA wants access to our data. All data. Based on the latest revelations we already know that:

“Companies like Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft — they all get together with the NSA and provide the NSA with direct access to the backends to all of the systems you use to communicate, to store your data, to put things in the cloud, and even just to send birthday wishes and keep a record of your life. And they give the NSA direct access that they don’t need to oversee, so they can’t be held liable for it.”

So far, Greenwald and the rest of the mainstream media have been emphasizing a handful of company names valuable to the NSA as great sources of data gathering on individuals – companies and organizations such as Facebook, Google, Apple, Yahoo and Microsoft. Now think about it, if NSA is that interested in garbage personal details we post on Facebook, how interested would it be in a far more telling database such as PayPal, where it can get all our expenditures, money transfers, payments and donations?

Prior to Snowden revelations we had NSA’s easy access to and control of telecommunication companies such as AT&T and Verizon. Recently, based on less than 1% of Snowden’s documents we became aware of NSA’s incestuous partnership with social media and software companies such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Apple.

We still don’t have access to 99% of Snowden’s NSA documents and revelations. Obviously the 50,000+ page documentations includes many other companies and organizations, including those in possession of the public’s financial transaction data. We are talking credit card companies and other related financial institutions. More importantly, we are talking about one of the world’s largest online money transfer entities, PayPal Corporation.

Thus, we all should be alarmed when we see that those implicated in the whistleblower’s documented evidence are now forming a multi-million dollar business venture with those in possession of that evidence.  We all must question the unexplained changes in the U.S. government’s position on the ownership and publication of these documents. We must all be wary when we see how readily mainstream publishers and Hollywood studios are signing up to publicize these documents and the case with some unexplained immunity. We have to ask ourselves: what has changed? What gives? Only a few months ago there was all this talks about apprehension, jailing, hanging and droning of all parties involved. Only a few months ago the parties involved put on a magnificent show on how they were threatened, endangered, and were going to be persecuted and prosecuted. Then, suddenly, something changed. Something gave. Was it a secret deal struck between the government and the involved parties establishing immunity and support in return for something much more cynical and dark? Was it the involved parties using the cache as a blackmailing tool to secure a $250 million payoff?  Was it a solemn oath to withhold and never release the ‘real’ deal in return for a glamorous life with Hollywood studio deals and multi-million dollar book contracts?

Which one is it? We have no way of knowing, since lips seem to have been sealed, and the release of the ‘real’ documents has been vaguely put on hold for years to come. On the other hand, thanks to some ‘real’ whistleblowers out there, we are getting some information putting this smoke and mirrors filled stage into perspective. Even if so far we have gotten to see only the tip of this convoluted and corrupted iceberg.

  • Putin currently has 150,000 troops on  Ukraine’s borders and it is reported some have crossed into the  country
  • President Obama says he is ‘deeply  concerned’ by the news
  • The US and Britain have both made ‘crisis  calls’ to President Putin to warn him to respect territorial  boundaries

A treaty signed in 1994 by the US and Britain  could pull both countries into a war to protect Ukraine if President Putin’s  troops cross into the country.

Bill Clinton, John Major, Boris Yeltsin and  Leonid Kuchma – the then-rulers of the USA, UK, Russia and Ukraine – agreed to  the The Budapest Memorandum as part of the denuclearization of former Soviet  republics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Technically it means that if Russia has  invaded Ukraine then it would be difficult for the US and Britain to avoid going  to war.

The revelation comes as reports suggest the  Kremlin was moving up to 2,000 troops across the Black Sea from  Novorossiysk to  their fleet base at Sevastopol.

At least 20 men wearing the uniform of the  Russian fleet and carrying  automatic rifles surrounded a Ukrainian border guard  post in a standoff  near the port yesterday.

Last night it was still unclear the exact  scale of Russian boots on the  ground in Crimea or the identity of gunmen who  have taken over airports  in Simferopol and Sevastopol – though reports suggest  they are Russian  marines or Moscow- controlled militias.

The action came as President Obama delivered  blunt warnings to Moscow.

‘We are now deeply concerned by reports of  military movements taken by the  Russian Federation inside of Ukraine,’ he told  reporters at the White  House.

‘Any violation of  Ukraine’s sovereignty and  territorial integrity would be deeply  destabilizing,’ he said in a brief  appearance.

‘The United States will  stand with the  international community in affirming that there will be  costs for any military  intervention in Ukraine.’

U.S. officials also said the President could  scrap plans to attend an international summit in Russia and take negotiations on  deepening trade ties with the country off the table in response to Russian  involvement in the Ukraine.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel added: “This  could be a very dangerous situation if this continues in a provocative way.”

Asked about options in a CBS News interview,  he said that “We’re trying to deal with a diplomatic focus, that’s the  appropriate, responsible approach.”

Both the U.S. and the UK are advising against  all non-essential trips to Ukraine – especially Crimea.

former British Ambassador to Moscow Sir Tony Brenton, who served as British Ambassador from 2004 to 2008, said in an interview that war could be an option 'if we do conclude the [Budapest] Memorandum is legally binding.'

former British Ambassador to Moscow Sir Tony Brenton,  who served as British Ambassador from 2004 to 2008, said in an interview that  war could be an option ‘if we do conclude the [Budapest] Memorandum is legally  binding.’

NATO also asked Russia not to take action  that could escalate tension. However Moscow responded by telling the  organization to ‘refrain’ from provocative statements on Ukraine and respect its  ‘non-bloc’ status.

Sir Tony Brenton, who served as British  Ambassador from 2004 to 2008, said that war could be an option ‘if we do conclude the [Budapest] Memorandum is  legally binding.’

It promises to protect Ukraine’s borders, in  return for Ukraine giving up its nuclear weapons.

Kiev has demanded the agreement is activated  after insisting their borders had been violated.

In response Mr Brenton said in a BBC radio  interview: ‘If indeed this is a Russian invasion of Crimea and if we do conclude  the [Budapest]  Memorandum is legally binding then it’s very difficult to avoid  the  conclusion that we’re going to go to war with Russia’.

Ukraine accused Russia of a ‘military  invasion and occupation’, saying Russian  troops have taken up positions around  a coast guard base and two  airports on its strategic Crimea peninsula.

Russia kept silent on the accusations, as the  crisis deepened between two of Europe’s largest countries.

Any Russian military incursion in  Crimea  would dramatically raise the stakes in Ukraine’s conflict, which  saw  pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych flee last weekend after  three months of  anti-government protests. Yanukovych  vowed Friday at a news conference in Russia to ‘keep fighting for the  future of  Ukraine,’ though he called any military action ‘unacceptable.’

Moscow has vowed to  protect Russian-speaking  Ukrainians in Crimea, where it has a major  naval base, and Ukraine and the West  have warned Russia to stay away.

Russia did not confirm its troops were  involved in Friday’s action in Crimea, which would be a major escalation.

In Kiev, Ukraine’s parliament adopted a  resolution demanding that Russia halt steps it says are aimed against  Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and called for a U.N.  Security Council meeting on the crisis.

THE BUDAPEST REFERENDUM

Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances  was a international treaty signed on February, 5, 1994, in  Budapest.

The diplomatic document saw signatories  make promises to each other as part of the denuclearization  of former Soviet  republics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

It was signed by Bill Clinton, John Major,  Boris Yeltsin and Leonid Kuchma – the then-rulers of the USA, UK, Russia and  Ukraine.

The agreement promises to protest  Ukraine’s borders in return for Ukraine giving up its nuclear  weapons.

It is not a formal treaty, but rather, a  diplomatic document.

It was an unprecedented case in  contemporary international life and international law.

Whether is it legally binding in  complex.

‘It is binding in international law, but  that doesn’t mean it has any means of enforcement,’ says Barry Kellman is a  professor of law and director of the International Weapons Control Center at  DePaul University’s College of Law told Radio Free  Europe.

‘I can only describe this as a military  invasion and occupation,’ Ukraine’s newly named interior minister, Arsen Avakov,  wrote in a Facebook post.

The chief of Ukraine’s security council,  Andriy Parubiy, seemed to strike a less strident tone later in the day, saying  gunmen had tried to ‘seize’ the airports in the Crimean cities of Simferopol and  Sevastopol but insisting in comments to the Interfax news agency that ‘de-facto  the airports are controlled by the law enforcement bodies of Ukraine.’

Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service also  said about 30 Russian marines from Russia’s Black Sea Fleet – which is based in  Sevastopol – had taken up position outside the Ukrainian Coast Guard base in the  area. It said the marines said they were there to prevent any weapons at the  base from being seized by extremists.

Russia’s defense ministry had no comment.

Yanukovych made his first public appearance  since fleeing Ukraine in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, not far  from the Ukrainian border. It was the first confirmation that he had left the  country, and he said he was ‘forced’ to do so only after his family received  threats.

‘I intend to keep fighting for the future of  Ukraine,’ he said.

Yanukovych said he supports Crimea’s  residents who are worried about ‘nationalists’ in Kiev and added that Russia  cannot stand by while events in Ukraine unfold. He denied, however, that this  amounts to a call for military intervention.

‘Any military action in this situation is  unacceptable,’ he said.

The prosecutor-general’s office in Kiev said  it would seek Yanukovych’s extradition to Ukraine, where he is wanted on  suspicion of mass murder in last week’s violent clashes between protesters and  police, during which over 80 people were killed.

Associated Press journalists approaching the  Sevastopol airport found the road leading up to it blocked by two military  trucks and a handful of gunmen wearing camouflage uniforms and carrying assault  rifles.

A car with Russian military plates was  stopped at the roadblock. A man wearing a military uniform with a Russian flag  on his sleeve got out of the car and was allowed to enter on foot after a brief  discussion with the gunmen.

The moment armed men storm Crimea government  building

At the airport serving Simferopol, commercial  flights were landing and taking off despite dozens of armed men in military  uniforms without markings patrolling with assault rifles. They didn’t stop or  search people leaving or entering the airport, and refused to talk to  journalists.

One man who identified himself only as  Vladimir said the men were part of the Crimean People’s Brigade, which he  described as a self-defense unit ensuring that no ‘radicals and fascists’ arrive  from other parts of Ukraine. There was no way to verify his account.

The airport deployments came a day after  masked gunmen with rocket-propelled grenades and sniper rifles seized the  parliament and government offices in Simferopol and raised the Russian flag.  Ukrainian police cordoned off the area but didn’t confront the gunmen. They  remained in control of the buildings Friday.

The Russian foreign and defense  ministries  had no comment. Russia’s state RIA Novosti and Interfax cited an unnamed  official from the Russian Black Sea Fleet denying  involvement, saying Russian  servicemen stationed in Crimea have not  moved into the airports and denying  that the Russian military was in  control there.

Tensions between the two countries were high,  however. Russia continued with  massive combat readiness exercises involving  most of its troops in  western and southern Russia that it said were unrelated  to the Ukraine  conflict. The moves were reminiscent of Cold War brinksmanship.

The Kremlin, in a statement published late  Thursday, said President Vladimir Putin had instructed the government to  ‘maintain contacts with the counterparts in Kiev in what concerns trade and  economic ties between Russia and Ukraine.’

Moscow has been sending mixed signals about  Ukraine but pledged to respect its territorial integrity. Putin has long dreamed  of pulling Ukraine, a country of 46 million people considered the cradle of  Russian civilization, closer into Moscow’s orbit.

Meanwhile, Swiss prosecutors announced they  had launched a criminal investigation against Yanukovych and his son Aleksander  over ‘aggravated money laundering.’

They said police and Geneva’s chief  prosecutor conducted a search and seized documents Thursday at the premises of a  company owned by Aleksander Yanukovych.

Switzerland and Austria both said they would  freeze any assets Yanukovych and his entourage might have in those countries.

Ukraine’s population is divided in loyalties  between Russia and the West, with much of western Ukraine advocating closer ties  with the European Union while eastern and southern regions look to Russia for  support.

Crimea, a southeastern peninsula of Ukraine  that has semi-autonomous status, was seized by Russian forces in the 18th  century under Catherine the Great, and was once the crown jewel in Russian and  then Soviet empires.

It became part of Ukraine in 1954 when Soviet  leader Nikita Khrushchev transferred jurisdiction from Russia, a move that was a  mere formality until the 1991 Soviet collapse meant Crimea landed in an  independent Ukraine.

In a bid to shore up Ukraine’s fledgling  administration, the International Monetary Fund has said it is ‘ready to  respond’ to Ukraine’s bid for financial assistance; Ukraine’s finance ministry  has said it needs $35 billion over the next two years to avoid default.

The European Union is also considering  emergency loans for a country that is the chief conduit of Russian natural gas  to western Europe.

And Putin, in his statement, asked his  government to ‘hold consultations with foreign partners including the IMF and  the G8 nations to provide financial aid to Ukraine.’

The Ukraine should be in the business of the Ukrainians. The EU/UK/USA/Russia need to KEEP OUT of it along with all the oligarchs interested in raping this country of their land and minerals, the gas pipelines notwithstanding. Arseniy Yatseniuk – Central Banker PM Says Ukraine Ready for IMF Auction Block

Expect more separatist and ethnic violence after IMF victimizes Ukraine

Kurt Nimmo Infowars.com March 3, 2014

Arseniy Yatseniuk, the central bankster PM of post-coup Ukraine, has signaled IMF-inspired fire sales are on schedule.

Yatseniuk: Ukraine will “collaborate” with IMF and the banksters.

On Monday Yats, as the U.S. State Department fondly calls him, said Naftogaz Ukrainy, the national oil and gas company of Ukraine, will be put on the auction block.

Ukrtransgaz, a Naftogaz Ukrainy subsidiary, operates the natural gas pipelines in Ukraine. The pipelines are used to transit Russian natural gas to eighteen European countries, including France and Italy. Naftogaz is the sole importer of Russian natural gas provided by Gazprom, the largest extractor of natural gas and one of the largest companies in the world.

Yatsenyuk is also ready to impose IMF austerity on Ukraine, already one of the poorest nations in Europe. “Yatsenyuk is the kind of technocrat you want if you want austerity, with the veneer of professionalism,” Vladimir Signorelli, president of boutique investment research firm Bretton Woods Research LLC in New Jersey, told Forbes last month. “He’s the type of guy who can hobnob with the European elite. A Mario Monti type: unelected and willing to do the IMFs bidding.”

Mario Monti, also known as Super Mario, the former EU commissioner and Italian prime minister, pushed “emergency austerity” measures on the Italians in a bid to stave off the collapse of the EU’s fiat currency. Super Mario targeted pensions and imposed “a radical and ambitious package of spending cuts and tax increases,” according to The New York Times. Although the draconian measures restored “international credibility” – in other words, the measures were favored by the international financial elite –they resulted in a fierce backlash in Italy. A similar backlash will undoubtedly occur in Ukraine after Yatsenyuk and the IMF impose austerity measures at the behest of Brussels and Wall Street. The nationalists now in control of the country will scapegoat ethnic minorities and Russia.

Signorelli notes that prior to the State Department engineered coup, Yatsenyuk fell behind former heavyweight boxer Viltali Klitschko and Oleh Tyahnybok, leader of the ultranationalist and neo-fascist Svoboda Party. “But Yatsenyuk had friends in high places and while he does not have strong support of the electorate, and would have no chance of winning an election, he is pro-IMF austerity and apparently the bulk of parliament is as well,” writes Kenneth Rapoza for Forbes.

While the now deposed democratically elected president, Viktor Yanukovych, resisted the IMF’s demand to raise taxes and devalue the currency, Yatsenuk was installed to make sure Ukraine and its public infrastructure, including its natural gas pipelines, are sold off to the banksters and their corporatist buddies.

“We saw this in the 90s and what the IMF did to Russia with Yeltsin. They’ll do that to Ukraine,” said Signorelli.

Ukraine, with its history of ethnic division, can expect more social upheaval and strife. “Remember Slobodan Milošević in Yugoslavia? After the IMF finished with Yugoslavia it was only a matter of time before the separatist movements gained traction,” Signorelli said. “I think things in Ukraine can get really really bad.” Source

Natural Gas is What Detonated the Ukraine Crisis

$

Global Research, March 03, 2014

russiachina2

This week the whole of the western media and geopolitical discourse reads ‘Crisis in Ukraine’, and the media juggernaut is quickly morphing into one of ‘The West vs Russia’. Few in the western media, much less the leading political mouths in Britain, Europe and the US, are willing to address what triggered this latest geopolitical ‘crisis’. It’s better to move the public along with the threat of war narrative (much better for news ratings).

Always Smoldering – Ukraine’s Gas Debts to Russia

Defending Moscow’s December 18, 2013 agreement to provide Ukraine with an aid package estimated at about $15 billion, and cheaper natural gas through discounts and “gas debt forgiveness” estimated as able to save Ukraine $7 bn in one year, Vladimir Putin said the decision to invest $15 bn in ‘brotherly slavic’ Ukraine, and grant the gas discount was “pragmatic and based on economic facts”.

At the time, the “investment” in Ukraine was already conditional – not only on the political issue of Ukrainian loyalty to Moscow – but on Ukraine complying with previous longstanding, often revoked, modified or extended commitments to repay gas debts dating from as far back as the early 1990s.  In December, Russia’s Finance minister Anton Siluanov said payment of the “aid or investment” funds to Ukraine, in tranches of about $2 bn each, would need Ukraine making a serious response to end-2013 estimates, by Russia, of the minimum “monetized gas debt” Ukraine has to pay. Siluanov’s ministry said this was about $2.7 bn, itself a large downward revision on other published figures from Russian sources, extending well above $5 bn. His ministry also published statements suggesting that Ukraine’s non-payment of gas taken and consumed by the country, since 2010, ran at a yearly average as high as $2 – $2.25 bn.

To be sure, events starting in February as the “Maidan movement” drew massive public support in the capital and western Ukraine to overthrowing the government-in-place. This was a repeat of Egypt’s anti-Morsi flash mob street revolution, followed by the Saudi-financed military coup against elected president Morsi. In Ukraine, however, the street magic stopped in the east, and especially in Crimea where 75%-85% of votes cast in the 2010 election were for Viktor Yanukovych.

To be sure, this blood-colored version of the Orange Revolution aimed at aligning Ukraine with the European Union may have scarpered further bail out payments by Moscow. Any upping of the ante, as enacted and supplied by NATO and John Kerry, could lead to Russia also making a total shutdown of gas supply to Ukraine – Kiev’s Independence Square flash mob could hope that Global Warming will shorten the winter, ease heating needs, and give Ukraine a head start for becoming a debt wracked European Union associated country – but this is far from a sure thing.

Debt, Gas Debt and Gas Prices

The national gas debt will surely feature in the round of proposals for “Ukraine bailout” being developed by the IMF, European Commission, EU member states on a bilateral basis, the US and potentially other actors, including the ECB and the UN ECE (the UN’s European economic agency), as well as private banks and energy companies. One thing is sure and certain, much higher gas prices for Ukraine are inevitable, under any scenario.

As of early January 2014, Russia’s second largest state bank, VTB, organized the first tranche of the $15 bn financial bailout, by making a $3 bn sale of Ukrainian debt bonds on the Irish Stock Exchange, guaranteed by Russia’s $88 bn sovereign-wealth National Welfare Fund, which was also tasked with financing of the $7 bn natural gas price discount and gas debt forgiveness to Ukraine in counterparty for Ukrainian starting payment of its monetized gas debt.

Current estimates of Ukraine’s total national debt stand at about $145 bn, around 80% of GDP in 2013, but late-February foreign exchange reserves were said by newswires to be only about $15 bn.

Although heavily affected by political rivalries and disputes, Yulia Tymoshenko’s two-month-only role as Ukrainian deputy prime minister responsible for fuel and energy, in 1999-2000, included her attempts at cutting back Ukraine’s constantly rising gas debt, by proposing a huge increase in gas prices inside the country. One of her proposals was for Ukraine to start paying Russia’s Gazprom $400 per thousand cubic meters (about $11 per million BTU, close to current west European prices at the major gas hubs NBP, Zeebrugge, Baumgarten).

After her “time in the political wilderness” and return to power as Prime Minister in 2007, this price was a major bargaining chip in very rocky Ukrainian negotiations with the Kremlin and Gazprom. Her supposedly “surprising” decision to pay for Ukraine’s gas through gas trading using a specially created Switzerland-based trading subsidiary, partly owned by Gazprom and major business and political figures in Ukraine – several of them “suspected of organized crime” – was a key factor in the 2009 “Ukraine-Russia gas crisis”. Tymoshenko tried a political wriggle-out by claiming there was either no outstanding Ukrainian gas debt – or that if it existed, it was now the debt of Swiss-registered company called, RusUkrEnergo.

Only for year 2008 gas deliveries, the new and additional gas debt of Ukraine towards Gazprom was estimated by analysts at about $2.4 bn. Since 2010, about the same annual rate of gas debt increase is claimed to have been racked up by Ukraine, according to Russian sources such as Alfa Bank Moscow.

Certainly at times in the long, complicated and dispute-riddled negotiations with Tymoshenko, Alexei Miller, CEO of Gazprom said his corporation could and would supply Ukraine with gas at $235 per thousand m3, but RusUkrEnergo was too attractive to Ukrainian business and political players as an opaque gas payments and trading entity able to be milked for huge kickbacks. On January 1, 2009 Russia halted all shipments of gas to Ukraine and demanded $450 per thousand m3. Then prime minister of Russia, Vladimir Putin said that $470 would be the future price, close to the 2009-price paid by many EU national gas companies “lower down the gasline”, of about $500.

Proving the extent to which this was Kremlin armtwisting of Ukraine, to make Tymoshenko close down RusUkrEnergo for reasons including this entity’s total impossibility of repaying national gas debt, when gas supplies were resumed after the crisis they were billed by Gazprom at about $230 per thousand m3, far below then-current west European gas prices, and still so, today.

Even this price was however too much to pay, for Ukraine. To be sure, inside Ukraine, especially after its government collapse and the “disappearance” of its now-fugitive (for western Ukrainians) former president Yanukovych, Russia can be portrayed as cynically allowing Ukraine to run up massive, unpayable gas debts. For Gazprom however, the euros-and-cents costs of gas supplies, trade and disputes with Ukraine over the years is a black hole for corporate finances. Some analysts suggest that only for the three years 2011-2013 Ukraine’s total gas debt could be $7 bn, and that writing this amount off (calling it a “friendship discount”), and returning to the previous $2.7 bn “official monetized gas debt” figure was pure political largesse by Vladimir Putin, aimed at buying Ukrainian loyalty.

The Spring Gas Crisis is Coming

Ukraine-Russia gas crises are “traditionally” short wintertime crises, which ups the ante each time, as Ukrainians start to freeze, businesses and industry shut down and the lights go out. This time however, the effects may be enduring. Ukraine’s gas debt will certainly feature in negotiations aimed at relaunching the Ukrainian economy. Gas supplies to the country from Russia, under a presently far-from-impossible worst case scenario, could be terminated pending the immediate and full payment of outstanding gas debt – without “friendship discounts”. Currently Ukraine is unable to pay west European gas prices or repay gas debt, or its sovereign national financial debt. To be sure, if Ukraine’s gas supply is cut off, this will create havoc “further down the gasline” and reignite the energy security debates that the short but dramatic 2009 crisis triggered across Europe.

In a 26 February article “Sustaining Ukraine’s Breakthrough” published by Project-syndicate, George Soros argued that Ukraine needs a modern equivalent of the Marshall Plan. He reminded his readers that while the Marshall Plan aided western Europe’s recovery from the ravages of World War II, it did not include the Soviet bloc and reinforced the Cold War division of Europe. Soros said that a replay today of the Cold War would cause immense damage to both Russia and Europe, but he forgot to say that this time around, Ukraine needs a Marshall Gas Plan.

With no shadow of doubt “the gas question” will feature in what happens in the present stand-off between Putin’s Russia and the west – and inside Ukraine – and will powerfully underline the energy economic interdependence of Russia and Europe.

Also sure and certain, Ukraine will pay much more for its gas, and will have to face its accumulated gas debt, as the role of seaboard LNG terminals is given more attraction due to the present crisis, underlining the geopolitical risk of international gas pipelines.

Ukraine, Chevron to sign shale gas project agreement in March:

minister Kiev (Platts)–3Feb2014/931 am EST/1431 GMT

.

Ukraine and Chevron will sign an operational agreement in March that should see the US major start work on shale gas extraction in the country, acting Energy and Coal Industry Minister Eduard Stavytskiy said Saturday.

.
“We have worked out the agreement and will sign it in March,” Stavytskiy said at a press conference. “I hope that we will complete this work in the first quarter.” Ukraine and Chevron signed a production sharing agreement, or PSA, in November 2013, paving the way for a $10 billion shale gas development project in regions bordering the European Union.

.
The agreement, which follows a similar deal signed with Shell in January 2013, is seen as improving the country’s energy security and potentially reducing dependence on imports of natural gas from Russia.

.
Government work has been disrupted over the last couple of months due to massive street protests in Ukraine after President Viktor Yanukovych decided to change the country’s foreign policy direction away from closer integration with the EU and towards closer ties with Russia.

London — A senior aide to British Prime Minister David Cameron has resigned after being arrested on suspicion of child pornography offences, Downing Street confirmed Monday.

Patrick Rock, 62, was arrested by officers from the National Crime Agency last month.

“On the evening of February 12, Downing Street was first made aware of a potential offence relating to child abuse imagery,” said a Downing Street spokesman.

“It was immediately referred to the National Crime Agency.

“Patrick Rock was arrested at his home in the early hours of February 13, a few hours after Downing Street had reported the matter.

“The Prime Minister was immediately informed and kept updated throughout,” he added.

“This is an ongoing investigation so it would not be appropriate to comment further, but the Prime Minister believes that child abuse imagery is abhorrent and that anyone involved with it should be properly dealt with under the law”.

Rock, who helped draw up guidelines on internet porn filters, was an adviser to the Conservative party for 30 years.

A friend of Cameron told the Daily Mail, which uncovered the arrest, that the prime minister was “extremely shocked”.

“Downing Street confirmed Rock was one of the advisers involved in the Government’s policy on internet filters to protect against child abuse images online.

Google and Microsoft agreed in November to introduce changes that will prevent such images from being listed in results for more than 100,000 searches.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said: “Patrick Rock was one of a number of   advisers and officials involved in dealing with this issue but the work was led by somebody else, and decisions were taken by ministers.”

An NCA spokeswoman declined to comment, stating it did not name suspects on   arrest.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Mar. 4, 2014 – A bill that would nullify Agenda 21 in Oklahoma passed through the state house today

HB2807, the “Oklahoma Community Protection Act,” would prohibit any state agency or political subdivision from adopting or implementing “policy recommendations that deliberately or inadvertently infringe upon or restrict private property rights without due process.” It also would void any previous commitments which may have been made under Agenda 21 or a similar program. It reads, “any debt or commitment to an international or federal entity whereby the citizens did not have the ability to exercise their constitutional rights shall be considered null and void.”

The bill passed by a vote of 66-26.

“This bill protects your private property from being acquired by eminent domain from without a public vote or public hearing,” said bill sponsor, Rep. Lewis Moore.

The United Nations passed Agenda 21 in 1992 at its Conference on Environmental and Development. The global initiative encompasses a wide range of programs meant to promote “sustainability.” It works its way into the U.S. system through a back door strategy, targeting local governments. Objections to Agenda 21 include violations  of personal property rights, the erosion of state and local authority, and  binding of the United States to international agreements contrary to the U.S. Constitution.

HB2805 now moves to the state senate, where it will first need to be passed by a committee before the full senate has an opportunity to concur.

Egypt tightens grip on mosques to curb Islamist dissent

Imam Abdul Salam Badr leads the Friday prayers in Cairo, where four imams are being investigated for ‘inciting violence and calling for anti-government protests’

Cairo: Egypt’s military-installed authorities are tightening their grip on mosques by laying down the theme for the weekly Friday sermons, in the latest move to curb Islamist dissent.

The controversial measure comes as Egypt remains deeply polarised after a government crackdown on supporters of Islamist president Mohammad Mursi, who was deposed by the army last July.

Mursi’s supporters have since capitalised on the weekly prayers to garner backing for their protests calling for his reinstatement.

The authorities accuse Islamist groups, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood to which Mursi belongs, of using mosques to spread their ideology and enrol new recruits across Egypt.

The religious endowments (Waqf) ministry in late 2013 dismissed 55,000 imams (prayer leaders) who did not hail from the state-controlled Al Azhar university, the most prestigious institution in Sunni Islam.

They were accused of “inciting violence and using mosques to spread religious extremism and promote Islamist groups”.

Amnesty International says the crackdown on pro-Mursi supporters has already left more than 1,400 people dead since his overthrow.

In January, the ministry, which has nearly 120,000 mosques on its list, decided to unify the Friday sermon by setting a common theme for the weekly prayers.

“The latest procedures aim to prevent incitement to violence and the spread of lies in mosques, which were being used by the Brotherhood to spread their ideas and fool people,” ministry official Sabry Ebada said.

The decision was also taken to “spare mosques from political fights”.

Scuffles have often broken out between pro- and anti-Mursi camps during Friday prayers, particularly when the sermon appears to favour one side over the other.

But now imams have government-approved themes such as squatter settlements, the role of youth, employment and the environment.

“The ministry’s decision is aimed at controlling the Islamist current supporting the Brotherhood at a time when many imams feel sympathetic towards the Brotherhood and Mursi,” said Amr Ezzat, a researcher with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.

“Mosques are the scene of an ongoing battle between authorities who are trying to prove that their policies are in line with Islam, and the current of political Islam which is trying to strip the state of its religious legitimacy.”

But not all imams are toeing the government line, and Ezzat said the ministry had “no tools allowing it to impose its control over all mosques”.

Khalaf Massoud, imam of Montazah mosque in Cairo’s working-class neighbourhood of Imbaba, has talked of what is “right and wrong” in his Friday sermons, in a reference to the ongoing political strife in Egypt.

“The state is adopting measures to secure backing through religious preachings,” Massoud said. “This is unacceptable. I am an imam who follows religion, not an imam who follows power.”

After last Friday’s sermon, four Cairo imams were being investigated by the ministry for “inciting violence and calling for anti-government protests,” ministry official Ebada said.

The control of mosques, many of which run their own charities, is important for both sides, said Georges Fahmy, an analyst with the Cairo-based Arab Forum for Alternatives.

These places of worship are “channels through which public opinion is formed,” particularly in Upper Egypt and the Nile Delta, both rural areas, he said.

And the control of mosques is vital for Islamists to air their views since the authorities have shut down many of their television stations, Fahmy added.

Each week’s theme is published on the ministry’s website and also passed on to imams by their local waqf offices in Egypt’s 27 provinces, said Mohammad Abdul Salam Badr, imam of a northern Cairo mosque.

Worshippers are divided over the measure.

“I am against unifying the sermon,” said engineer Bahaa Marwan as he attended a sermon at Assad Ibn Al Furat mosque, a stronghold of pro-Mursi Salafi preacher Hazem Abu Esmail. “The intention is political and the objective is to silence dissent.”

Another worshipper, Ahmad, agreed, saying the aim was “to make people listen only to what the government has to say”.

But Mahmoud Hussain, a 53-year-old electrician, backed the move.

“The government is trying to defuse the situation by silencing those who are inciting violence,” he said.

“The Muslim Brotherhood movement’s belief in the inseparability of politics and religion proves that its true goal is to establish a theocracy, and that its declared acceptance of political pluralism and the alternation of power is insincere,” Abdul Rahim Ali, founder and director of the Arab Centre for Islamic Movements Studies, told the majlis of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.”

The Power Elite and the Muslim BrotherhoodThe MB had originally supported Nasser, and the 1952 revolt, but they became disenchanted with him when it became apparent he would not establish an Islamic state. They were blamed for an assassination attempt on him in 1954, and according to Copeland, interrogations of MB members after the attempt revealed they were merely a “guild” that fulfilled the goals of western interests: “Nor was that all. Sound beatings of the Muslim Brotherhood organizers who had been arrested revealed that the organization had been thoroughly penetrated, at the top, by the British, American, French and Soviet intelligence services, any one of which could either make active use of it or blow it up, whichever best suited its purposes.”

Boghdadi, 1958.jpg
Boghdadi, February 1958 – source: wiki commons
Last week Cairo Ex-governor General Ibrahim Baghdadi had passed away and some people believed that he took away with him the truth ; the truth of the enigmatic sudden death of King Farouk. My dear reader Ibrahim Baghdadi did not enter the Egyptian history because he was the Governor of Cairo but because he was accused of poisoning King Farouk in Italy.

Ibrahim Baghdadi is and was widely accused for decades of being the man who poisoned King Farouk’s meal at Ile De France restaurant in Rome on  the 18th of March 1965 by the orders of Gamal Abdel Nasser and his fearful secret services. Of course the man till his death swore by God that he did not have a hand in Farouk’s death. He w5appeared on TV and made interviews annually to deny the charges that seemed to follow him till his grave. The man swore everyday in his life that he did not do it but unfortunately no one believed him because all the evidences revealed by time were against him.

The Undertaker

Officer Ibrahim Baghdadi was from the first generation of the Egyptian intelligence along with Zachariah Mohi El-Din, Mohamed Nassim, Salah Nasr and Fathi El-Dib. He is said to have the alias “undertaker” in the agency as he used to kidnap Nasser’s political dissidents from Europe bringing them drugged in coffins to Egypt. “The GIE stopped that technique after some dissident had woke up in the coffin making noise in Rome international airport , I believe Ayman Nour and Saad El-Din Ibrahim are thankful they did not live the Nasserite Era in its worst times” .

52li4sssssmj4

Baghdadi is the second from right below, he is on the left of Sami Sharaf

In March 1965 he was in Rome at the same time Farouk was , his justification was strange and increased suspicion ; he was there on vacation where he used to work as a waiter in Ile De France restaurant , one of Farouk’s favourite restaurants !!

Ibrahim Baghdadi did not deny that he was in Rome despite from time to time he denied that he was working as a waiter. Needless to say when he remembered that he worked as a waiter ,he did not Ibrahim Baghdadi-1 mentioned the reason why and he was was working in our UN delegation then *officially* ,he would go and work as a waiter in Rome !!!??

His weak justifications made him look guilty more especially that he was working in the same restaurant Farouk had his last supper at. You do not need too much brain to think that he poisoned his meal. The fact that when he returned back to Cairo and had become the governor of Monfia after 2 months of the incident stamped the crime on him. The promotion was like the reward.

Aconitine

According to him that rumour as he called was spread in Egypt after the six days war in 1968. Salah Nasr revealed in his infamous case investigation aka the scandal of the intelligence service that King Farouk was killed  by highly poisoned and rare Aconitine in order to justify the disappearance of huge Aconitine quantities from GIE.  “how much did they need in 1965 to poison Farouk and was it only Farouk that needed this quantity !!?? “

Aconitine just like the coffins was a signature of Nasser’s secret service to eliminate the enemies, after all poison is a perfect silent death. Aconitine is said to be the poison used to get rid from Abdel Hakim Amar ,whose so-called suicide is just another X-File in our Egyptian history . Aconitine is said to be have no taste in guava juice and thus all the victims of  Nasser secret services were found to drink juice in their last meal according to the urban legend.Of course when you check the meal King Farouk ate in the last supper you won’t find guava juice but rather water, soda and coca cola according to what was announced.  It is widely believed that it is untraceable in autopsy but this is untrue . Of course there is no specific antidote for it up till now. It causes cardiac arrest if it is absorbed by skin in large quantity or digested. Farouk suffered from cardiac arrest if we want to be accurate.

Revealed before its time

But it was not Salah Nasr who really  revealed it. It was before 1967 war and before Nasr’s case. In fact it was right after the sudden death of Farouk in 1965 that the name of Baghdadi began to appear as the prime suspect in a strange way. May be because my grand father was a journalist then he heard it but even if he had connections then how this very important information was leaked or even why. If we are talking from security and political point of views not from sentimental or moral point of view , you will be amazed how this operation was leaked in details like this. Such operation should not be revealed in that way after very short time or even no time taking in consideration that we are speaking about 1960s not 2009 where is a huge communication technology. The leak of such operation means burning an active field officer who was Baghdadi then exposing his cover forever and this what he had happened actually.

Was a deliberate leak from the GIE to brag their latest achievement ?? Was a deliberate leak from the Nasser regime to warn the Saudi Royal family not to mess with him !!?? Well he did not need that  as they were already aware on how he would go. For me how this information was leaked with the name of the field officer and the kind of poison used in that time is another Egyptian X-File !!

The last Witness Farouk could have imagined !!

The rumour was repeated and somehow was detailed when Etmad e3temad-khorchid Khorshid tell all book “ A witness on Salah Nasr’ perversity” was published in 1988. The book which is considered from the most important sources about the infamous intelligence scandal and its trial did not miss this important mystery. Etmad says that Nasr was in her house on the 18th of March when he was so worried , he told her that he was waiting for important telephone call from abroad , she was amazed that he gave her telephone number to his co-workers and how they would call him for important issue in her house. She continues saying that after acting like trapped tiger ,he told her :

Farouk will die tonight

and he was right Farouk died that night. Etmad says that she knew that the assassination of Farouk was led by Nasr’s aide “I.B” aka Ibrahim Baghdadi under the supervision of the Italian intelligence agency “Servizio Informazioni Difesa” and its spy chief whom Etmad claims that he was Nasr’s friend !! It is worth to mention that Etmad only mentioned the initials of “I.B” for fear she would be sued but everybody knew whom she was referring to.

Etmad goes and says the Egyptian intelligence gave Farouk’s mistress one million dollar to poison him !! I must hint out that Farouk during that time was on relation with Irma Capece Minutolo publicly and she was in Monte Carlo then. You will wonder whom Etmad meant , well you have to wait for a while !! It is interesting enough to see that in Etmad’s version Baghdadi was more like a supervisor , he was not a waiter and did not put the poison himself, it was the king’s mistress as she called her who took one million dollar !!

This What was mentioned in Etmad’s famous book that topped the best selling books in Egypt in late 1980s and still causes Etmad Khorshid controversy . Historians , experts and journalists do not take every word in this book seriously for several reasons starting from the fact that many people consider Etmad as a cheap woman not a victim plus some believe that her book is full of exaggerations . I saw Etmad in an interview and I believe she is a poor educated woman who found herself inside a world she did not belong too nor she did fully understand. I do not believe or disbelieve her account of events because this woman only saw one dimension of the history.

How I did kill him !!!

Then came Mahmoud Fawzy’s book “How I killed King 115326Farouk !!” Despite the fact that journalist Mahmoud Fawzy interviewed Baghdadi in the book , the conclusion you get from it that Baghdadi actually killed Farouk. Strangely despite Baghdadi was angry from Fawzy , he always appeared with him in TV Shows to repeat the same defence and Fawzy repeated the same accusation. With my all respect to Mahmoud Fawzy , I am not that fond of him nor of his TV shows which I believe is more like a channel to sell his books. Mahmoud Fawzy is just repeating the same popular story that Baghdadi disguised as a waiter and poisoned Farouk. Nothing  new to be added except that Baghdadi kept defending himself attacking the Royal family and Farouk.

Another book and another story

Dr. Latifa Salem said in her wonderful comprehensive biography “ King Farouk” in the last chapter that king Farouk died after a meal and that there were rumours in Egypt that the Egyptian intelligence was behind his death. As professional unbiased historian Dr.Latifa did not dish on the GIE intelligence not because for fear but because I believe the real historians need more solid proof from documents in their books than hear- say stories.

Still Dr. Latifa besides mentioning the theory in short reference , sheAlone in the exile mentioned very interesting fact that actually King Farouk went to dine with a lady friend called “Anna Maria” in Ile De France restaurant.Yes he ate too much but strangely when he began to feel sick towards the end ,”Anna Maria” suddenly disappeared and up till now we do not know nothing at all about her !!!

Anna Maria disappearance was suspicious for sure and it fits the scenario Etmad mentioned in her book that King Farouk’s mistress or rather lady friend had something to do with his death.

The unpopular unknown story

Now  despite the popular story that late Baghdadi had killed Farouk , I have another story where Baghdadi had killed somebody too but he was not Farouk but rather the man who actually poisoned King Farouk !! Yes you read it right ; there was another secret service officer who did the dirty job and Baghdadi as a senior officer was making sure that the job was done 100%. The officer name 56078_14_mainwas “Essam Al-Masry” and after finishing his dirty job he went to Brazil to receive some orders where he was poisoned by Baghdadi himself !!! He was poisoned by the same poison he used to kill King Farouk.

I do not know how accurate this story is , but it is also a realistic scenario that is frequent in the dirty world of the secret services all over the world. Also if you notice it goes with what Etmad’s mentioned in her book that Baghdad was supervising the operation.

A Possible scenario

All indications say that Farouk was killed, eating too much does not kill in that way. With the Italian intelligence cooperation Nasser secret service sent Essam Al-Masry and Baghdadi as his supervisor to get rid from Farouk . Farouk had a meeting that night with a lady friend “Anna Maria” who was cooperating with GIE for money, I believe the role of Anna Maria was not to poison Farouk but to persuaded him to go to Ile De France on that particular night !! Come on have you ever wondered why Farouk went to that restaurant on that particular despite he could have gone to any other fancy restaurant in Rome !! For sure Ile De France was not only favourite restaurant there. Al-Masry some how was working in the restaurant probably in kitchen itself not a waiter ,where as Baghdadi pretending as a waiter he made sure that the last supper reached to Farouk as it should. Of course there are 2 details I can’t keep them out of my mind ; the Italian accent and Egyptian facial features of Baghdadi. Farouk was not dump to know that that waiter was not an Italian especially that he was fluent in Italian , also Baghdadi did not look Italian !! These are side marks , of course they do not meant that I do not believe the accusations or the fact that Farouk was killed on that night.

The official death Story

The official death story according to the Italian authorities ; the former King of Egypt and Sudan ate too much leading to his death in other words Farouk had killed himself by his love to food !! No autopsy was done by the request of Queen Farida who as soon as she heard the news arrived to Rome to take Queen Farida in 1965in charge and to help her daughters and step son,the young King. According to King Fouad II and Princess Farial the former Queen refused the autopsy because it was against the Islamic rituals,of course autopsy is not against Islamic rituals, the Queen was bluffing and using the advantage that the young princesses and little king did not have enough religious information in order to protect them.Farida knew the door she was opening if she insisted on autopsy, if Farouk was found to be poisoned officially in front of the whole world. Young King Fouad II could be in danger along with his sisters, Farida knew how dangerous Nasser regime could be for sure.

  • You can see a slide show for the funeral of King Farouk here
  • You can watch a silent newsreel about the funeral here , I highly recommend it.

King Farouk’s funeral – Rome 1965

Advocates of natural death causes

The opponents of King Farouk and Nasser supporters say that there was no need to kill the ex-king as he was no danger on Nasser, whose popularity exceeded Egypt to the Arab world.  Well the Nasserites can say what ever they want because in the end Nasser was a politician and a president and for sure he considered Farouk as a danger on his status , after all he got rid from most of all the revolution council except very few for fear they were going to take his chair !!?? Shall I remind you with Mohamed Naguib who was sent to an exile till Nasser’s death ??

Not to mention that we are speaking about the mid 1960s where the West and several Arab countries could not take any more from Nasser and his Eastern Arab Nationalist policies especially Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Farouk already showed some little but alarming interest in politics in 1950s from time to time according to historians.

The former King was under the eye of Nasser’s secret service especially in Italy and he knew it very well and that’s he avoided Egyptians in Italy for fear that they would meet trouble when they returned home. Salah Al-Shahad , himself mentioned this in one of the books about his career in Royal then the Presidential palaces. Al-Shahad was in a visit to Italy when he found Farouk in the street , when he tried to approach to salute him, the later avoided him , but Al-Shahad insisted to sit with him. Of course when he returned to Cairo , Nasser asked him about the incident , Al-Shahad defended himself that this was his ex-boss and he would not accept to ignore him , believe it or not Nasser respected him. Anyhow this incident shows that Farouk was under the eye of Nasser’s secret service very carefully , you won’t send your men to put an eye 24/7 on a man that does impose a danger on you !!??

Farouk despite what may appear in desperate images and careless public actions of an exiled King I believe he had from time to time hope that somehow the Mohamed Ali rule may return back to Egypt even if it were not him , it would be his son. The late ex-King insisted the young last King of Egypt Ahmed Fouad II to be educated in a military school preferably in UK , Farouk did not want his son to repeat his mistake again, of course God had other plans , Farouk died and Ahmed Fouad II did not enter the military school. This was an important indicator.

The second indicator I did not read it but I gathered from different sources to form my own theory is that may be Nasser received an information from his secret service that Saudi Royal family was  working on getting Farouk back in some way or another. It was year 1965 ,we were stuck in Yemen War and the Egyptian-Saudi media war reached its epic. I do not have doubt that The Sauds thought of helping their old friend back to Cairo, their relations were so strong already.

Back to Baghdadi , well he is dead now , the neo-royalists of course wish that he may rotten in hell , well I can’t share the same wish , all what I can say that may God mercy his soul as a Muslim. I believe that this man had killed many people regardless of whether he killed King Farouk or not. It was the divine revenge from the undertaker that he became in the memory of the generations as the murderer of King Farouk. It was the divine revenge that he would be accused and stained from all the secret service officers with that dangerous accusation and it was the divine revenge that he kept defending himself till the end but in vain.

About whether Farouk was assassinated or not , well the truth has not been buried yet , it is not buried with late Baghdadi , it is buried in some file in the GIE archive and I believe one day we will know the truth and close that Egyptian X-File after reading that GIE file just like many other files.

Also I want to say something if the Egyptian intelligence was responsible of the murder of King Farouk of Egypt and Sudan then ,this would not mean that it is bad secret service that should be attacked and disrespected by some whether in that old era or even now as some people believe we still live in the post revolution days !! The political assassinations which Nasser and Amar adopted to eliminate their enemies does not mean that the Egyptian intelligence during that dark was 100% bad because at the same time the undertaker was on loose there were men like Mohamed Nassim May God bless his soul protecting his country as much they could.

Ibrahim Baghdadi info:

  • Ibrahim Baghdadi fought in Palestine war 1948.
  • He was from the first GIE officers generation.
  • He worked in the intelligence service from 1954 to 1965
  • He was appointed as the Governor of Monfia from 18/11/1965 to 31/8/1967
  • He was appointed as the Governor of Cairo from 16/6/1971 to 7/9/1972 “Strangely the Khedival grand opera house was burned in his time !!”

King Farouk’s memorial

Kingfarouk1948.jpg

King of Egypt and the Sudan
formerly King of Egypt, Sovereign of Nubia, Sudan, Kordofan, and Darfur

Today remarks the 32 anniversary of King Farouk’s death in his exile in Italy on the 18th of March 1965 in an incident that till now is considered enigmatic. The official report said that he died from a heart attack from the food he ate , while conspiracy theories said that President Nasser secret service killed him in his exile to ensure that he would never come back again , conspiracy that I will speak later about , may be next year insh Allah.

King Farouk when he passed away , he was only 45 years old despite his chubby body in his last years made him look much older , he was born on the 11th of February 1920,the Egyptian son of King Fouad the first and his heir to the Egyptian throne. He was called “Farouk” the first ,I don’t why but this was silly, really silly , you see there was no other Farouk in the family so he can be called the first or the second , of course my remark is even sillier as I am talking about something that ended from decades.

A banquet organized on the occasion of the wedding of King Farouk I and Queen Farida of Egypt. The persons appearing in the photograph are (from left to right): Princess Nimet Mouhtar (1876–1945), Farouk’s paternal aunt; King Farouk I (1920–1965), the groom; Queen Farida (1921–1988), the bride; Sultana Melek (1869–1956), widow of Hussein Kamel, Farouk’s paternal uncle; Prince Muhammad Ali Ibrahim (1900–1977), Farouk’s 2nd cousin once removed.

I look to King Farouk’s biography and life and I see a person who was a victim not the victimizer like the east and west used to portrayed him , if he were victimizer then the victim would be himself , he didn’t fight back , he just surrendered to life , I am not speaking about the king position and the monarchy , hell no.

Farouk I with his wife Narriman and their son Fuad II in exile in Capri, Italy (1953)

King Farouk showed a great political and patriotic scene when he gave up his position on the night of the 24th of July 1952 , when he made his mind to leave the throne in without a fight in a way that surprised the free officers themselves , he had the chance to ask the British to interfere, just a small phone call but he didn’t because he didn’t  want the a stinky shoes of a British soldier to touch the Egyptian Soil . He wanted and wished the best for Egypt , and because he loved her so much ,he knew that he wasn’t the best choice to rule Egypt then , and that’s why his last word to General Mohamed Naguib when he was leaving Egypt for the last time to his exile on the board of “El-Mahrousa”

I wish that you succeeded in what I failed in

He was more patriot than one ruled Egypt in that century , you want a proof listen to what “Salah Jahin” learned from late “Salah El-Shad” in the Egyptian Foreign ministry during his work there , Mr. “El-Shad” told him that king Farouk was more patriot than both Nasser and Sadaat.

Farouk I with his wife Queen Farida and their first-born daughter Ferial (c. 1939)

Yes he was because he gave up a rule that mentioned the greatness of it in the holy books whether the Torah or Bible or Quran because he felt that he failed in his mission , because he knew that this nation deserves better than him

King Farouk I Tomb in Refaii mosque – Cairo – Egypt

He chose to step away where as now some are dying to get the throne of the oldest nation on the surface of this , the throne of the mighty Pharaoh

Farouk was a real pharaoh who loved this country truly , yet of course Pharaohs are always defamed and erased by the succeeding pharaohs

Please read the Fataha on his soul

Did the Egyptian “revolution” overthrow of the ‘Alid dynasty bring Egyptian democracy, stability and enlightenment?  The same can be asked of the overthrow of the Iraqi, Iran and the Afghani monarchies or did it bring about totalitarianism,  repression, chaos, and destabilization in each country? The more things change the more they stay the same – or worse…

Egyptian and Tunesian involvement in Crimean War ‘erased from history’

By Paul Crompton | Al Arabiya News Monday, 3 March 2014

As tensions mount amid Moscow’s apparent military occupation of Ukraine’s Crimea region, many are unaware that Arab forces fought there 160 years ago.

Arab involvement was “erased from history,” said Egyptian historian Mahmoud Sabit.

A key reason could be that unlike often-exhaustive Western army accounts, Ottoman military records are extremely hard to find, said military historian Andrew McGregor.

“Many Ottoman officers were in fact illiterate,” he wrote. “while many of those who could record their thoughts might have thought twice about detailing the corruption and intense personal rivalry that plagued the 19th century officer corps.”

In the early 1850s, tensions between European powers, the Ottoman Empire and Imperial Russia were simmering.

Long-running dispute

Russia was locked in a long-running border dispute with Turkey, particularly in Crimea, which had been captured from the Ottomans in the 1700s.

Russia also sought to exercise protection over the Orthodox people of the Muslim Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecid I.

The conflict was sparked when the Ottomans negotiated a treaty that made France responsible for Christian sites and people within their empire, a role previously reserved for Russia.

The sultan needed help to defeat his longstanding arch-foe, and called on the army in its province Egypt to assist.

Dynastic superiority

Egypt, which had previously rebelled from Ottoman rule under viceroy Muhammad Ali, had a superior military capability to the 550-year-old Ottoman Empire.

Ali’s grandson, the ruling Abbas Pasha, believed that sending troops to Crimea for the Ottoman cause could help curry favor with the sultan for a time when it might be needed.

“In a sense, this was one way of Egypt’s ruler… to appease Istanbul and say: ‘I’m the loyal, reliable viceroy sending you assistance in times of need’,” said Khaled Fahmy, a history professor at the American University of Cairo.

Taking no chances, the sultan also amassed a Tunisian contingent of 10,000 men.

Egypt amassed 40,000 soldiers specifically to fight in Crimea under the designation of the Ottoman Empire, said Sabit, a descendant of Selim Pasha, a general who led the main Egyptian military contingent in the war.

In 1853, with war brewing, the sultan sought the help of Britain and France, making up a powerful allied force against the vast, feared Russian army.

The first military action the Egyptian contingent experienced was the siege of Silistria in mid-1854.

Supply and command

The Egyptians went on to another military victory at Eupatoria, an important part of the allied supply chain, said Sabit. In early 1855, Russia began an assault of 19,000 men and 108 guns in an attempt to take back Eupatoria. The attack failed, although 400 Egyptian soldiers, along with Selim Pasha, were killed.

The conflict, which lasted almost two and a half years, saw total losses over half a million soldiers on all sides.

The Egyptians “fought better and were more disciplined compared to the regular Ottoman army,” said Sabit, quoting the account of a French logistics commander who was at the battle of Eupatoria.

For the remainder of the war, Egyptian replacements continued to arrive in Crimea, and were eventually repatriated in 1856, when the war finally ended with Russia’s defeat.

Forgotten History : #EgyArmy in Crimea

Monday, March 3, 2014

As Egyptians are now boosting on how Oscar Winner Kate Blanchett started her acting career as an extra in one of Egypt’s 1990s cult films “I consider it a cult film” , they are now boosting on how the Egyptian army Yes our Egyptian army fought along the Ottoman army in 1853 over the control of Crimea against the Russian army.
.
Oh yes we did. Saudi owned News Channel reminded us with that forgotten piece of our history from Prince Omar Tousson’s book “The Egyptian army in the Crimean war 1853-1855” According to Prince Tousson, the Ottoman Emperor asked the help of his allies and thus Abbas I of Egypt then sent Egyptian troops to help him. He sent a fleet of 12 warships with 6850 soldiers and 642 cannons led by Admiral Hassan Pasha El Iskandarany. For land battles , Abbas I sent 20,000 solider and 72 cannons led by army commander Selim Pasha Fathy who died in the battle there and was buried in a cemetery near the Big Khan Mosque.
.
After the Ottoman’s victory in the battle , two Egyptian warships sunk in the Black sea and Egyptian Navy lost 1920 of its members in one of our Egyptian navy’s worst disasters ever. Prince Omar Tousson was one of my favorite princes and characters in the Mohamed Ali Royal Family as well one of my favorite Egyptian explorers who a great role played a real role in Egypt’s scientific and cultural life  in the first half of the 20th century.
Commander of Egyptian troops Ismail Pasha-Roger Fenton

Now more sources about what our army did in the Crimean can be found in this fantastic website “Ottoman-uniforms which provides links to interesting websites about that war and the Egyptian participation there. This website got more details and info about the war than Tousson including more losses for Egyptian armed forces there. For instance in a war battle with Russian Navy where Egyptian Frigate “Damietta” was sunk also in the Black Sea and on its board not less than 400 Egyptian soldiers. In Land battles we had our shares of losses as well despite fighting bravely. We lost about 400 soldiers who were buried in the Islamic Cemetery of the city.

.
Ottoman-Uniforms websites links to rare photo gallery and letters of British Photographer Roger Fenton who took photos from this war where he spoke about the Egyptian troops and its commander Ismail Pasha. Here is a photo of Ismail Pasha along with his men including a Nubian Slave. “I hate that word” Here is a photo gallery for the photos I found it for our troops there.
 .

Unfortunately all that information are not to be found in the official website of Egyptian armed forces. Speaking seriously I feel sad when I meet Egyptians who do not know about the Egyptian army and its conquests , battles and adventures in the 19th century I feel very sad because we got a very interesting experience in that era from 1805 to 1882.

.
Of course this ignorance is a result of Nasser’s policies to erase all the Pre-1952 history keeping the old heritage of the pharaohs alive changing the official history in order it would start at his time. A thing we are still doing it , a thing we can not get rid of it. It is one of the crimes the 1952 July made actually when you think about it. As long as we have no access to our true history and its records we will never learn from our mistakes for real.
Russia (for obvious reasons - not the USSR) has always protected the Christian Orthodoxy.

Open Season on Coptic Christians in Libya

It’s open season on Coptic Christians in Libya.

March 4, 2014

Libya: Ansar al-Sharia (“Supporters of Sharia”)

A few days after seven Copts were identified as Christians, pulled out of their homes by “unknown gunmen” and taken out and executed in Jarutha, some 20 miles west of Benghazi (see here for graphic pictures), Egyptian Copts are still being singled out and killed.

This comes after the Islamic jihadi group, Ansar al-Shariawhich appears connected to Egypt’s now ousted Muslim Brotherhood—offered a reward to any Benghazi resident who helps them round up and execute the nation’s few Christians, according to Egyptian human rights groups.

Yesterday another body was found, believed to be that of a Copt—due to the small cross tattooed on his wrist traditionally worn by Egyptian Christians, not least to identify themselves.

And the day before that, another Coptic Christian, Salama Fawzi, 24, was shot at, including in the head, while he was unloading food in front of his grocery stand in Benghazi by several “unknown gunmen”; he is currently in critical condition.

Under Col. Gaddafi, many Copts migrated to Libya looking for work opportunities.  However, since the dictator was ousted—and sodomized and murdered, to gleeful laughter by Hillary Clinton—Christians have been under attack there, from the arrest, torture, and killing of Christians accused of “proselytizing,” to the bombing and burning of churches in the north African nation, evincing the true nature of the U.S-supported “Arab Spring” takeover of Libya.

Kiev agitators ‘trained in Poland’ claims Putin

President Putin claimed on Tuesday that “well prepared” and organized protesters in Kiev who brought down the Yanukovych regime were “trained in Poland and Lithuanian.

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks about the situation in Ukraine during his meeting with journalists at the Novo-Ogaryovo presidential residence outside Moscow, Russia, 04 March 2014. Russian President Vladimir Putin says he sees no need to send Russian troops to Ukraine now, calling it a ‘last resort”: – photo – EPA/ALEXEY NIKOLSKY /

.

In his first in-depth comments since the Russian parliament gave the green light for military action in Ukraine on Saturday, Vladimir Putin told a press conference in Moscow, “look how well they were prepared.” “They underwent preparation in bases in Lithuanian and Polish border areas, and [of course] in Ukraine itself. Their instructors were ready for a lengthy time, you saw how they were prepared, like special forces, they were even divided up into squads,” Putin told journalists.

.

On Saturday, the vice-president of the Russian Federation Council claimed that “gunmen who took over power in Kiev were trained in Poland and Lithuania”. The Polish defence ministry categorically denied the accusations on Tuesday. A confident looking Russian president said today that, “there can be only one assessment of what happened in Kiev, in Ukraine in general. This was an anti-constitutional coup and the armed seizure of power. No one argues with this,” he said. Putin said Russia reserved the right to use all options in Ukraine to protect compatriots living in “terror” but that Moscow would use force only as a last resort. “As for bringing in forces. For now there is no such need but such a possibility exists,” he said. “What could serve as a reason to use military force? It would naturally be the last resort, absolutely the last.” (pg/jb) source: IAR -

India Is Capitulating to the GM Biotech Industry. Genetically Modified Food Crops Destroying Agriculture

$

india

Can genetically modified (GM) food crops be kept out of India?

Things seemed positive when, as Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh put a moratorium on GM eggplant (BT Brinjal). However, he has now been replaced. Veerappa Moily, India’s Oil Minister, is now also India’s new Environment Minister. Oily has approved field trials of 200 GM food crops on behalf of companies like Monsanto, Mahyco, Bayer and BASF. Monsanto’s shares surged by 77 percent as soon as Moily’s decision was announced.

For his efforts, Oily has been called a “corporate mole,” (1) and the Coalition for a GM Free India and Greenpeace condemned Moily’s action as “unscientific, anti-people and reeking of vested interests.”

Rajesh Krishnan, convener, Coalition for a GM Free India said:

“The writing on the wall is clear now. The UPA government is against the interest of the citizens, our farmers and the welfare of the nation. It is hand in glove with the multi-national GM seed industry that stands to gain immensely from the numerous open field trails of GM crops.”

Environmentalist Vandana Shiva argues that there are no detailed protocols that cover all dimensions of the ecological, health, and socio-economic impact of GM organisms (2) and that it was precisely to evolve such protocols and strengthen India’s Bio-safety regulatory process that the Supreme Court appointed a Technical Expert Committee (TEC). The Committee recommended a ten-year moratorium on GM organism approvals till scientifically robust protocols, independent and competent institutions to assess risks and a strong regulatory system were developed.

Despite the TEC recommendations pertaining to risks, protocols and regulations, the trials will involve a deliberate release of GM organisms in the open environment. A ban on open field trials would however not constitute a block to research because, as Vandana Shiva says, scientific research is done in laboratories and greenhouses and open field trials are not in any case a methodology for assessing toxicity or carcinogenicity.

Last November, hundreds of scientists raised serious concerns about open air field trials of GM crops in India by writing a letter to the Prime Minister. Their letter coincided with the release of a compilation of 440 scientific research studies on the impact of GM crops on the environment and health (3). The scientists demanded that the recommendations of the TEC be accepted. In their letter, they said that the final report of the TEC has recommended against the deployment of Bt food crops in India until their safety is established, and recommended avoiding Herbicide Tolerant GM crops.

Like Shiva, the scientists are not saying that trials have to be stopped, as trials can happen in a glasshouse environment. However, they warned against open field trials as the impact of such food crops must be established. As there is no code of practice and no infrastructure to conduct large scale open field trials, the scientists suggested that open field trials should not take place.

Open field planting and the release of GM organisms into the environment are part of a deliberate ploy to contaminate non-GM crops and eventually render the GM/non-GM debate obsolete. This is not a wild claim: one only has to look at the widespread contamination of wheat and rice in the US due to hundreds of open field trials carried out by the biotech sector and similar concerns about contamination in India (4).

And, in this respect, current developments in Australia are further cause for concern.

A recent report (5) that appeared in The Australian newspaper notes that most Australian farmers grow GM-free food. The current non-binding recommendation guidelines for managing GM canola cultivation in Western Australia are very weak and only recommend a minimum of five-metre separation between a GM and non-GM canola field. Such a small buffer zone cannot prevent GM contamination.

A landmark trial is now under way in the Western Australia Supreme Court. It began when farmer Steve Marsh lost his organic certification on 70 percent of his farm and most of his livelihood after his land was contaminated by GM canola patented by Monsanto and grown in the adjacent property.

This is a global issue, and GM industry ‘corporate moles’ who are forwarding the GM biotech agenda are not unique to India (6,7). However, it is reasonable to assume that India remains more susceptible than most, not least because the story of open air trials of GM crops in India has thus far been a story of blatant violations of bio-safety norms, hasty approvals, a lack of monitoring abilities, general apathy towards the hazards of contamination and a lack of institutional oversight mechanisms (8,9,10). Similar concerns exist elsewhere, of course, but the situation in India appears to be worse than most.

Open field testing is part of the GM sector’s plan to win the battle to dominate and control the food chain by any means possible. It cannot win the scientific debate (9). It cannot convince people to freely choose its products (10). But it seeks to win by various insidious means, not least by infiltrating official bodies and contamination – by all means necessary (11).

Australian Farmer Taking Monsanto Farmer to Court

Farmers File Lawsuit to Protect Themselves Against Monsanto ….

They control the seed they control us…

There’s nothing they are leaving untouched: the mustard, the okra, the bringe oil, the rice, the cauliflower. Once they have established the norm: that seed can be owned as their property, royalties can be collected. We will depend on them for every seed we grow of every crop we grow. If they control seed, they control food, they know it – it’s strategic. It’s more powerful than bombs. It’s more powerful than guns.

This is the best way to control the populations of the world. The story starts in the White House, where Monsanto often got its way by exerting disproportionate influence over policymakers via the “revolving door”. One example is Michael Taylor, who worked for Monsanto as an attorney before being appointed as deputy commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991. While at the FDA, the authority that deals with all US food approvals, Taylor made crucial decisions that led to the approval of GE foods and crops. Then he returned to Monsanto, becoming the company’s vice president for public policy….

Jimmy Obama

Vladimir Putin has taken the measure of Barack Obama. He’s found Jimmy Carter.

Like Jimmy Carter, who boasted he was free of any “inordinate fear of communism,” Obama began his term as president vowing to “reset” relations with Russia.

Like Jimmy Carter, who conveyed weakness when Iran took our embassy staff hostage, Obama confirmed his own weakness when he drew a red line in Syria and then backed down from enforcing it.

Like Jimmy Carter, who was rewarded by Leonid Brezhnev with a Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Putin has returned Obama’s favor with a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

And just like Carter, who responded with what his staff called “a strong public statement,” Obama responded with his own statement saying he is “deeply concerned” by Russia’s military movement in Ukraine.

As in the Carter era, Obama-era defenders of inaction suggest there is little they can now do to get Russia out of Crimea. They are likely right.

Even so, Russia’s invasion was invited by manifold acts of American weakness — from our failure in Benghazi to the dubious deal we’re pursuing with Iran to denying our Eastern European friends missile defense to Obama’s failure to enforce the red line he himself drew in Syria. When you don’t resist aggression, you can’t be surprised aggressors raise the stakes.

At the same time, it’s simply not true that the United States has no options. Obama’s Republican rival in 2008, Sen. John McCain, has noted some of them: boot Russia out of the G-8; reverse the Obama defense cuts; restore missile defense for Eastern Europe; sanction individual Russian officials, etc.

In a memo to Jimmy Carter three days after that Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, his national security adviser summed up well the problem of words bereft of action: “Since we have not always followed these verbal protests up with tangible responses, [the Russians] may be getting into the habit of disregarding our concern.”

Memo to President Obama: Putin is disregarding you in Crimea for the same reason.

Krauthammer: paraphrasing - ”you’ve got to wonder what cosmos Obama and Kerry are living in when they say Putin is acting out of weakness.” – “I think he’s (Obama) delusional”….

German Home-Schooling Family Granted Permanent Asylum in USA

Michael Farris, chairman for the Home School Legal Defense Association, announced Tuesday afternoon that a supervisor with the Department of Homeland Security said that a Morristown family has been granted “indefinite deferred status.”

Essentially this means that Uwe and Hannelore Romeike and their children can stay in the United States permanently unless they commit a crime or otherwise violate the terms of their status.

The Romeikes immigrated to America from Germany after running afoul of a German law requiring children attend public school or an approved private school offering the state-approved curriculum. The Romeikes, conservative Christians who objected to several parts of the state curriculum, preferred to home school their children.

In refusing to send their children to public school, the Romeikes racked up heavy fines and faced the threat of having their children removed from their home. They left for America before that could happen.

Once in Morristown, they began the long process of seeking political asylum, which was initially granted in 2010, but lost on appeal. In the four years since, the case worked its way to the steps of the Supreme Court which Monday announced it would not hear the case, leaving several of the Romeikes’ supporters in fear that the family would be deported.

Roughly 24 hours later, that was no longer a fear.

“This is an incredible victory that can only be credited to our Almighty God,” Farris said. ” We also want to thank those of who spoke up on this issue–including that long ago White House petition. We believe that the public outcry made this possible while God delivered the victory. This is an amazing turnaround in 24 hours. Praise the Lord.”

For more on the story, including comments from Uwe Romeike and several supporters, see the Wednesday edition of the Citizen Tribune.

The United States took another punitive measure against Russia Tuesday, announcing it would not participate in a G8 Summit scheduled for Sochi in June unless Moscow reversed course on Ukraine, Reuters reported.

The move followed an hour-long phone conversation between President Obama and West German Chancellor Angela Merkel that senior administration officials told Fox News focused on trying to construct a diplomatic off-ramp to get Russian President Vladimir Putin to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine.

The White House released a statement saying the two leaders “agreed on the importance of de-escalating the situation, including through the deployment international observers and human rights monitors, and of initiating direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.”

The U.S. will boycott the Sochi G8 summit unless Moscow reverses its position on Ukraine, Reuters quoted a senior administration official as saying.

Officials acknowledged to Fox News that Europeans are skeptical of sanctions against Russia that may harm European economies, but these allies are also concerned that without sanctions, the situation in Ukraine could escalate.

Pressed on any potential military action if Putin takes more territory, the officials said they still see no scenario involving military action of any kind

Earlier Tuesday, at a press conference, Putin insisted that none of his troops had moved into Crimea — a statement that stunned U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

When informed by a reporter of Putin’s claim, Kerry — who arrived in Kiev on Tuesday — smiled and said, “He really denied there were troops in Crimea?”

Putin’s claim came as Ukraine’s interim Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said that ministers from his country and their Russian counterparts have started holding talks in a bid to ease tensions on the disputed Crimean Peninsula. FOX News and AP ^
